LED For Shop

Getting ready to install 4' LED bulbs in my garage. Noticed that they come in a "milky" lens, and a clear lens. From what I've read, the clear throws more light, but a cost a bit more. I'd like the clear (I think). Any drawbacks to having the clear lens?

I recently bought a 2 pack of the honeywell lights that sams club sells.one was bad out of the box,called and they sent me another pair.the first one I tried worked.I'm returning the bad light and the other good one to my local store tomorrow.they put out good light.they are in a 16x14 shed.

I did the same thing, and ended up going with the milky/frosted ones in the hope that they would diffuse the light a little better. LEDs tend to be very directional.

I don't know how that applies to your situation, but it might be something to consider.

I haven't seen 4' LED with clear glass, but given that LEDs are very bright at their source I think that the diffuse light from milky/frosted glass would be easier on the eyes, less distracting...

Frosted lens provides superior light diffusion. Yes you sacrifice a few lumens but the even distribution is well worth it. Below is an image of fixtures with clear lenses. Note the pattern on the back wall. A frosted lens will smooth that out.

Clear and frosted lamps are usually the same price. If anything, you're more likely to find lower priced clear lens than frosted.

I would not want to look up into a clear lens LED light. I have 20 LED wrap lights in my garage and like them. The wrap lights are probably comparable to frosted.

That's some good information. I suppose the frosted/milky cover would be the better choice. Thanks.

On 4' LED to replace Fluorescents or any fixture where the LED does not have a diffuser over it, you won't find clear lens LED acceptable below 12'. I like them at 16'.

^^^^^So, it's clear that they should NOT be clear. My ceiling inside, is only a bit over 8 feet tall.

I have a ten foot ceiling and went with clear led’s and have plenty of light coverage. My shop is 26l by 20w and have eight four foot fixtures.

I prefer frosted lens also. The light output is even and no glare.
