This seems to be a somewhat common problem. The issue is apparently cheap no-name LED lights/bulbs (landscape lights, Christmas lights, overhead lights) putting out RF interference from their internal power wiring, which sometimes happens to fall in the part of the spectrum used by garage door openers.
As for why did the problem take so long to show up in this case, it's possible some internal component of the lights has degraded slightly over time / weather changes, or maybe the batteries in your remote(s) have weakened gradually to the point where they could no longer overcome the interference, or it may just be that the problem was there all along but became more noticeable when you have to come home in the dark a lot more with it getting dark so much earlier for the last few weeks.
Things you can try:
- Fresh batteries in remote(s).
- See if your garage door opener system has an option to change the frequency it uses, which might get it just out of range of the problem.
- Clamp-on ferrite cores can be worth a try, but might not be enough since this problem usually originates internally near the LEDs, rather than back near the plug-in transformer where the accessible wiring is.
- If the problem is with the plug-in transformer, some suggest various ways of shielding it with metal/foil, but haven't heard of someone that was suggested to coming back and reporting success with that.
- Replace the lights/bulbs with an LED product from a major brand, especially one that has an FCC certification logo on the packaging to indicate it's been proven to not emit RF interference.
- Replace the lights/bulbs with a non-LED product.
- Consider adding a smartphone-controlled opener add-on such as
this to bypass the problem, if you have a smartphone and are tech-savvy enough to deal with the setup.
- When coming home after dark, get out of your car and stand right in front of the garage door to use the opener remote.
