lighting depth for cabinet

alright, i'm going to be building some wall mounted cabinets in my parent's garage to give them some more storage and clean up the wall a lot. Currently they have a board nailed to the wall and nails halfin halfout used as hooks. I was looking at building some mdf composite cabinets that has sliding doors instead of a swinging door. I was also thinking about putting some hooks on the bottom side of the cabinet so they could still hang their extension cords.

Anyways, to the main reason why I'm posting a new thread is I would light to put some recessed lighting under the cabinet possibly alternating with the hooks for more added light at night whenever they're pulling in or backing out. Neither of them are much of a handyperson so I'm just merely doing it for appearance more than anything. I've been looking on HomeDepot and Lowe's and the smallest depth I can find for a recessed light (that's circular) is about 4.5". Anyone know where I could get a smaller depth than that? I was hoping to find something around 2" or 3" so that a 15" would leave 1' of space for the actual cabinet.

Any and all help is appreciated. Whenever I get away from college and get it all put together, I'll put some pics of before and after too.

why not use the 8" or 10" (can't remember which size it is) fluorescents? They have about a 3/4" mounting depth, maybe 2" wide.

I have them under these cabinets, you can see the pvc running between cabinets for the wiring.

you might look at puck lights also they mount to the underside of the cabinet . They have become quite popular in kitchens . I cant say how much light they put off as I dont have them but it is an option for some added light and they are available at home depot and lowes and look hinda like a hockey puck.

I went by Lowe's today just to get some ideas.
The two ideas I came up with where the puck lights in a 3 set series, or custom make something. i'll probably just do the puck lights.

The pucks run HOT and use a lot more juice than flurescent....

Go with the Flurescents....they last longer and give out more light.

Not LED pucks. They don't run hot like the halogen pucks do.

Thats odd I used to be a maglight man now every flashlight I own has LED's in it they put off alot more light and are much smaller and lighter than the maglights I used to carry around. Did I mention I spend alot of time in dark basements ,crawlspaces and atticks in my job . I might also add LEDS last almost forever .

If I do pucks, I'm going with Xenon lights. It's only like 20 bucks for a 3 series.
