Hey guys, i'm looking for someone to move an old barn from my grandmothers old house to my house. It's roughly 20x40 and has a loft. Most all of the wood is extremely solid. It will need to be moved about 75 miles. I just don't want it to go to waste. I grew up playing in it, and think it deserves a new life. If anyone knows of someone who does it in the Southeast, let me know...thanks.

Through the business I work for we have had people from the Menonite community remove barns in the past and they have done a very good job. Typically, they have used the materials for their own purposes so I'm not sure if they would re-erect one for you ... there's no doubt they would be capable though.

may wanna look into house movers or something. I see them do it on tv on those home improvement shows. Not sure on the cost factor but it may not matter if it means that much to you and the family of course.

Check your phone book. House movers would be listed in it. I know it is "old tech" to use a phone book, but it takes care of most of your needs really fast.

I have checked with a few house movers....they won't de-rect and erect it....and it's too big to move in one piece.

WOW ! 75 miles is a long way to move a building. Just make sure whoever you get is insured to move buildings. I know a guy that had a modular home mover jack up his house to move it on to a foundation 20' away. The cribbing collapsed, house was wrecked and the guys insurance didnt cover anything but modular homes. My friend lost a crapload of money.

75 miles is a lot of wires to have dropped. Sounds really expensive. Someone nearby had an old 2-story farmhouse moved 12-15 miles, and if I remember correctly it was about $20K.

I believe that the OP is looking for someone that will dis-mantle the barn and re-erect it at the new site. That would be the more common method of moving a timber framed structure.

MottsRods, you might get in touch with one of the historically re-created places like Stone Mountain in Georgia or Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts. Those folks would certainly know where the people that do this type of work are.

These guys do this, and offer barns for sale: http://www.heritagebarns.com/

Looks pricey to me.

I once looked at a piece of property with a big barn, and a crappy old farm house. Turned out to be where David Koresh (of Waco fame) lived as a teenager. It was a beautiful 5 acres.

I think I may have found a guy who will do it. I sent him a pdf file showing the barns layout and height, materials and all, and that I wanted to put it back up on concrete footers and 2 rows high of blocks. He gave me a call this evening and told me he could do it. Total cost of moving and re-erecting on footers and block(he's doing them too) was $13K. Doesn't sound too aweful bad. He's gonna look into the permits, as he thinks i will be grandfathered in when moving an existing and antique barn.
