Looking for stop-less impact socket

Hi guys, I've been looking for an impact socket, 1/2 drive 17mm deep to be exact....to use to remove lug nuts. I use some steel long lug nuts and traditional impact sockets have a stopper to not allow the nut to move too deep into the socket. The problem is, the socket then doesn't grab all of the lug nut but only about 1/2 of it due to the stopper.

A friend of mine told me old craftsman impacts don't have a stopper. Does anybody know if this is true or of another brand manufactures such a socket without a stopper?

The broach is what you are referring to.

I have Snap ons that have a shallow broach, and then I have Wrights that have a super deep broach, which is the style you're looking for.

My Wright 13/16 and 7/8 are used for the lug nus on my ton trucks for the reason you mentioned.

My Craftsman US are deep broach, while my Snap On are shallow as mentioned above. Grab a US Cman off EBay.

It varies by brand. I prefer the deep broach, too. I got some 1/2" SAE deep and regular sets from Eastwood and they were shallow broach. Not worth returning. In most cases, either is fine. I didn't buy then for lug nuts. The trouble is, most companies don't include that info. in their specs. From this thread you now have that info. on several brands. If you are interested in a particular brand, contact them. This kind of info from here can be hit or miss, depending on who sees your question.

You will have a much easier time getting an individual Wright full broach socket than an individual US Craftsman.

I have metric and sae craftsman deep impact socket sets I bought new in the 90s. They are all broached all the way to the square drive end.

Another option would be to get a set of flip impact sockets made for lugnuts. They have a broaching that's about mid-length between a shallow-broached and full-broached deep socket.

Edit: just noticed kctyphoon linked a similar set above.

Let's all go measure out broach depths. I measured my 19mm and 21mm PROTO impact deeps; 1/2 inch drive. They both have a hexagonal broach depth of 30mm. Maybe even 31mm depending on how you look at it.

1/2"dr 17mm Deep Impact Craftsman (USA) 28mm broach
1/2"dr 17mm Deep Impact Craftsman (China) 26mm broach
1/2"dr Neiko Impact Flip Socket 17mm (?) 23mm broach

That's to where the hex ends. They all have several mm's more room past that for the top of a lugnut, threads or whatnot before there would be any interference.

The broach depth on my Deep Taiwan GENIUS impacts are a bit all over the place but here; 17mm - 29mm depth
19mm - 25mm depth
21mm - 37mm depth
But for lugs some impact sockets especially the Heavy duty ones can have really thick walls and give you clearance issues. You may he better off buying a lug 5pc set that is 17-24mm with thin walls and non scratching sides.

I measured the depth of the broach on my 19mm 1990s Craftsman deep impact today. 1.34" (34.04mm for you continental types) ;)

Why does it matter, it’s not like it won’t take off the lug nut?

Some of my Marco’s I warrantied out are now full broached, the 19 I just replaced is. I don’t like it

I can’t remember exactly when I made the purchase but I think that it was around 2002? Any way, my craftsman deep metric are stamped GK and the 17 mm has a hex internal that is about 11/2 inches deep.

It matters on lug nuts with the chrome caps. Not getting the socket all the way on greatly increases the chance of having an issue, in my experience.
