I would not trust any gift card these days. I was at a Home Depot register yesterday and used a gift card to try and pay. All the funds on the card had been stolen. Research online and contact with Home Depot consumer affairs revealed that within a defined time frame all Home Depot gift cards issued via American Express Rewards had been compromised. Home Depot/American Express are replacing the gift card as they have done for countless others. Do not put your money at unnecessary risk with the large number of gift card scams that are currently ongoing. You have minimal consumer rights as it relates to your protections from gift card fraud.

I vacillate between really hating lowes and just hating lowes a little. Rationally speaking I should probably buy a couple $k worth of gift cards but I just can't bring myself to do it.

I'm not so worried about that, as long as one buy's through a reputable dealer with protections. I'm more concerned about how the retailer handles returns (if one has to happen). With HD, if you use any gift card amount to make a purchase (even if multiple items that are way over the GC value), any return is put back onto a store-credit, and also swipe your drivers license (even though you have a receipt, thanks TRE you necessary evil)

The Retail Equation

many stores don't allow GC purchases with GC's, but if they do and you are worried about a card being compromised, buy a new one in store with your existing.

Gift cards provided by American Express were a, called by some, reputable source. You have no protections at law with gift cards except the goodwill of the seller/vendor. Do some research and get up to speed on the current state of gift card fraud in the US. Purchase at your own risk!

I stopped using the sites with used gift cards due to the links to fraud. I'd previously purchased them and used them within 24 hours to be sure, but now don't bother (I never personally had any issues though). This eBay seller is one that sells thousands of Lowes cards at a time, which are all new cards, so many of the risks seen with buying from CardPool, GiftCardGranny and other outlets are not present.

There is still the risk, as with buying the cards from Lowes directly, that if Lowes went bankrupt tomorrow, all giftcards would be worthless as you're an unsecured creditor. So only buy what you can afford to lose, and only buy what you plan to use in the next couple of weeks/months, and if you were to buy and return, you'd be happy getting store credit back.

If that's too much risk for a 10% savings, then just don't buy them and pay at Lowes via other means.

Sometimes they have a limit of 2 cards per eBay account, but if there was no limit, I would have no problem buying $10k worth if I was about to spend $10k on a new kitchen or something the following week. I'd put the transaction on my credit card, and get some protection there too.

But again, as with all Hot Deals, they are optional, and people are free to use them or not. I have my three cards, and it's not like my cards become worth more if more people buy Lowes cards.

My 3 cards will likely be used with some $15 off $50 vouchers (purchased on eBay) for insulation and sheetrock for my garage. $500 at MSRP, = $350 once I use the $15 off $50's, and then I pay with these cards, which cost me $270 (less my 1.5% cash back), and I end up paying about $320+ tax for $500+tax worth of supplies to complete my garage. Thats a combined 36% off MSRP savings!!! And that can be combined with specials too.

Thanks,

-SNS

A lot of companies use Amex to create cards, Best Buy used them when I worked there, and at one point Discover. But no matter the company that issues them, it is the company that you redeem them at that backs the amount. But every giftcard offers no protection, as it is the equivalent of cash that is only accepted at one place. The only way you could blame Amex would be if they had an issue that allowed fraud.

I've bought several GC's from several sources and never had an issue. Now, I wouldn't buy from the eBay guy with a single digit rating, but there are plenty of legitimate vendors selling legitimate cards. Obviously scams out there, but those scams are usually based on real deals.

I am up to speed, or over. :3gears:

Yep, I'm gun shy about gift cards now. Paypal digital gifts had an issue and people have lost thousands of dollars on gift cards. I had several hundred dollars of best buy gift cards drained. I bought right from paypal, who is the administrator of best buy gift cards. Luckily I got my money back from paypal, but it took weeks, lots of emails and phone calls. Only way I got it back was I previously had a contact from someone in the paypal executive escalation department and they made it right.

From everything I've read, I'm fairly certain that the algorithm to create these cards has been hacked and there is no captcha on the best buy site, so the hackers just brute force checking the balance on the possible combinations until they find one that is active. My cards were combined with 18 others to make a $2000 purchase. Best buy actually sent me the receipt where mine were used. It's like the lowe's coupon code generator. You've been warned!

I will say, I've been sitting on $200 in lowes gift cards for a long while and they are still good. On these I have physical cards, I was not emailed the code by paypal like with best buy. At least Lowe's makes the 'check your balance' page a little more secure. However, it's only the last 6 digits that are different on the cards, and 4 of those is the pin. Probably only a matter of time, but so far, ok.

Just wanted to update that I receive the three I bought today. Just used them on two 5 gallon cans of Drylok Extreme along with a $50 off $250 coupon. Most of the third card remains.

Deal is on again, but this time email gift cards, and it's $150 cards for $135.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Get-a-150-L...%3A7e41c44c15c0aa1202ca6fc5fffa2726%7Ciid%3A1

I went for two, and have them already.

Rules for getting a deal at lowes:

1) sick deals or renovopower have the $15 off $50, and now $20 off $100 and 10% off voucher codes for free (although they go fast, so otherwise you can buy on eBay).
2) I think it's ebates that give 5% cash back for lowes
3) Use one of these 10% off giftcards from eBay.
4) If you can buy in $50 increments and have shipped to store (i.e. free), then it is

$50 item
Less $15 coupon
=$35+tax
then use a cheaper gift card, and pay $34 out of pocket for a $38 order and receive $2 cash back. You could also have purchased your gift card on eBay with a cash back deal.

The final result, could be about $30 out of pocket for a $50+tax item. 40% off!!!
