I looked at that exact box, used in good condition, for $1200. It did sell, but not to me. Something sounds fishy with your deal.

Little liller toad something sounds very fishy, either the person has no clue as to price or that box is how should we say this in a nice way (let's see another word for stolen, how about carry away wrongfully and with intent to keep or sale for a quick buck).

yeah, the bills thing has kind of got me worried.
I'll add some more detail - mind you, it'll still sound a little fishy.

I know this guy from the flea market. He says that he's worked auto body his whole life and he knows his stuff. He's recently retired/no longer has his job so he says time are a bit tight. I've bought tools from him before. He says they're all his tools and they all have the same markings on them - 4 notches in the side of the tool. 2 weeks ago, he offered to sell me his old box. He said that he traded an older snap-on box plus some cash for it. The original asking price was $800. I told him that I had a friend who might be interested but that I couldn't drop that kind of money on it at the time. My friend didn't have the cash so he never called. I saw him again this week - bought some tools - and he told me that he needed the sell the box to pay some bills. He then said that he'd sell it for $300. I told him that I'd take a look. And that kinda brings us up to now.

if he "really knows his stuff" as he says, he knows he can sell that on CL in a day for a grand...unless its HOT!

A grand is 40% of new price. I would expect that is the used retail value for a box like that in very good, clean condition. $800 based on the OP description sounds right. It doesn't sound like a steal that would necessarily sell in a day.

Its very likely that he got it at an estate sale of some sort for a song and now wants to make $50-100 to get it out of his way. If he only sells at the flea market (ie: cash) without advertising on CL / Ebay / here it is pretty likely to sit a while at 800. 300 is a holy **** price. I would have expected at $500 at the flea it would sell in a weekend.

Get the serial number and call. If it is clean then pop on it asap.

I would be interested in examining the box closer. It looks like the generic chinese box sold by Crapsman, Waterloo, HF, Husky, Kobalt, etc. $300 is about right. it sure isn't worth the 2500$ price tag

300 sounds good.
I've picked up Matco 4725 boxes for 650 in excellent shape, and two months ago picked up a Mac Tech 1000 for 700 cash. That box looks brand new, came with a cover and the original receipt (He bought it a few years ago for 3400 cash).
Prices really are down on everything but SnapOn, and even those are below last years 'bargain' prices.

Check the number, buy the box.

SO how does that work if you did buy it and he owed money on it ? Is there a lien against it ?

What is the difference between that and some kid buying an xbox on a credit card and selling it while still owing money on it ?

If he bought the box under contract the box still belongs to the company or tool man that sold it to him. With the X box and credit card thing they can put a lein agaist you if you don't pay the card. If he bought the tool box with a credit card the same rules apply.

As far as the toolboxes go, i always heard that if you bought a box that someone owed money on it wouldn't effect you at all. That won't come after you or the box, they'll simply go after the original owner that owes the money. I've also heard that they don't track those boxes at all, theres nothing attached to the serial # other then basic info about the box. It isn't a car.

You might want to double check, this is all hearsay.

I moved out of town and went to work in a dealership back in the early 80's. I had a big new set of Snap-On boxes. The first thing the dealer did that serviced the dealership I was at was call Snap-On and give them the numbers off the box to see if they were stolen, owed money on or whatever. It didn't go real well with him for the first few minutes

Ive seen a vantage pro that still had like $1,500 owed on it get sold to someone for $500 when the dude lost his job and it just left the snap on guy up shits creek this is the only instance I have seen such a situation and from what I know there were no real ramifications to the seller or buyer, but this could be region sensitive maybe with different laws, but if I were you I'd just buy the damn thing.
