Man Door

Hi all, I have been building a pole barn style shop and stumbled upon a problem. I want to add a man door, but I am being told that requires the door framing to be 4x6s set 4' below grade like the main posts. Is this true and would there be alternate methods to frame in a man door without having to set the framing into the ground? I was thinking of securing the bottom plate to the concrete with anchors. Any ideas would be great.

Exactly how you just said. I venture to safely say that if someone was trying to break in, the force it'd take to shear anchors is probably not far from the force needed to shear a 4x6 planted in the floor. Just anchor it if you need to. I've seen many barns with concrete floors do this. I don't believe codes cared one way or the other when I built mine but definitely make sure yours don't require it one way or the other.

Who is telling you that, and do they have a say in your getting the CO? If the answer is no to the 2nd part of the question, then I'd carry on with your idea/plan.

Here's how the door framing was done on my barn.

The Building Department drawing guy at the County. And when I asked about the anchors he said I could submit that idea. And I asked him if that would be acceptable he just said I could submit that idea. No real answer. So I hope he’s just not jerking with me.

That guy, at our county, is a guy who had a construction business and it went bankrupt..... just sayin'. He wears croc's when he does inspections, and is afraid to climb a ladder.

Others I have dealt with in other locations were really great.
