I had another thread on the fabrication section about "My Last Work Bench".
I lied!! I had this one, a 5' long Bay brand, shoved over in the corner. Another swap meet score a few years ago at $20. Same day, same guy I also bought a steel top version for $20.
Anyway, I had enough aluminum diamond plate crew cab truck running board material left over from the other bench project to put a back splash on this work bench.
As you can see, the top was pretty well used up. Well instead of trying to refinish it, I just flipped it over, and presto, a clean bench top. I used flat head countersunk allen head bolts to bolt the top on. The holes were already there from the lag screws. I just had to go all the way through.
Used a 2"x10" for a back splash backer. Had to drill pilot holes into the hard maple for the 2 1/2" long deck screws. You'd think I was drilling steel. Cut the aluminum to length with my Milwaukee chop saw w/aluminum cutting blade.
That 1 3/4" piece of aluminum is all the scrap left from doing two work benches.
Some wood filler on a few unwanted holes and we have a nice bench. Same height as the other one I just built.
Again, several years ago I bought this three drawer custom made tool box made out of stainless diamond plate for $10. Hand made, this was a labor of love for somebody. I figured it would look good under this bench. Matching diamond plate motif. Even has a cover plate for the drawers.
