Hello, I just discovered this forum today and I love reading all the different thoughts and opinions here. I've decided that it is time to spend a few dollars on a real quality tool box and I have it narrowed down to two choices. The Matco 4s 3 bay, or a Mac 1080 "Tech Series". Both boxes are about the same size Matco is 33141 cu in and 8286 sq inches. The Mac is 30596 cu in and 8583 sq inches. And I can get both for about the same price. I know there are probably a thousand different opinions on this, but an thoughts one way or the other would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I would go with the matco everytime over a mac. But then again I went with a extreme 72x30 inch tool box cause I didn't want to pay matco/snap on price, couldn't be happier with that choice.

it all depends on what you like............the mac boxes i have owned have been top shelf but mac has been poor on service. the matco i have had some issues and matco stepped up. so six of one half dozen of the other. have you priced snappy?

This one will get some fists raised, but I'd rank a 4s Matco as comparable to a KRL Snap-On, and DEFINITELY better than a KRA series. Since your wondering about Mac vs. Matco, The tech series Mac's seem very cheap (Waterloo, I believe?). Their Macsimizer series is an awesome box, and I think its very much a lifetime box, but as Krusty said, ANY purchase from Mac these days seems to be a risk (at least in my part of the country). I have a Matco 4s triple bay, and if it were wider than 24", then I would probably consider it to be my "rest-of-my-life" box. But the 31" 6s large triple, that is a bad girl.

Matco uses virtually the same construction in ALL of their boxes, from the 4s to the 6s, in terms of drawer and wall thickness. Matco is really trying to make some good impressions by these impressive boxes.

Both boxes will do the trick, but the overall size isn't as important as the drawer configuration. I've had a LOT of boxes but unless you have the right drawer sizes for your tools you still have an organization problem.

Most people seem to want to go for the 'lots of small' drawer thing. But you end up with your tools scattered.
I would take more big drawers over more space in lots of little drawers.
Remember, it's easier to put in a divider, or even make one, than it is to find tools spread over three drawers.

On just the brand thing, I like the Mac's I have had, but I'm really fond of my Matco.

I am no fan of Matco Tools but I think their boxes are top shelf. Those Mac Tech series boxes are not in the same league IMO. I do like the Macsimizers though.
