Happy Saturday Gentlemen!

This question doesn’t appear to have been asked in GarageJournal since 2015 according to my research, so I’m interested to know if anyone here owns/uses Matco Silver Eagle tools, specifically purchased post-Covid?

I noticed that their 122 Piece set is made in Vietnam. COO is not an issue, but my concern is if the quality is there? These will not be everyday use tools, just something to use at home, put in my work truck for traveling and the occasional trip to the Pull-and-Pay.

I’m interested in changing things up a bit, and a comprehensive set of all metric (No SAE) tools seem to be what I’m interested in. I prefer to keep my tool sets in blow molded cases as I’m constantly on the move. I like that it also comes with pliers and screwdrivers, so that’s why this set caught my attention.

I appreciate any feedback and advice you’re able to give. IMG_4823.jpeg

There is an active thread discussing similar sets in blow molded cases, and the original post mentions the Silver Eagle set specifically. You might find some answers there.

A classmate of mine picked the 101 piece set up and I was a bit underwhelmed. The tools seemed like decent quality and it’s one of the few socket sets to incorporate wrenches, all in a slim case, but $300 (our student price) for it seemed a little high. The tools were basically Tekton quality. The $600 retail is madness. No way do I think it’s worth it.

I’d grab this set instead:

You could buy a spare set and you’d still come out ahead

Hakeem, do you have this set or used the tools? Only has a one year warranty on the tools I think.

No, I’ve just had my eyes on it for a while as a uniquely comprehensive “grab n go” automotive set. I wouldn’t expect much in warranty from any of the Euro brands — if something broke, I’d just buy a replacement.

For the occasional use that the OP was describing, I think it would hold up just fine. But if warranty is a concern, I’d stick with a domestic brand with solid warranty like Tekton or HF.

Looking at the description again, I’m very impressed - sockets from 4-32mm, wrenches from 8-19mm, torx, Allen keys, screwdrivers, bits. I really want that set but I use SAE much more than metric (truck mechanic here) so it wouldn’t see much use.

I didn't know Vietnam was active in hand tools. Especially truck brand tier 2 stuff.

I'd expect Taiwan only for those prices.
I don't know about other manufacturers, but Wiha has been making stuff in Vietnam for some time now.

Many Wiha bits are made there, and also pliers. I've had good luck with both.
