Matco tool set (silver eagle) made in China?

Didn't know matco had some of there stuff made in China. I figured they would atleast do Taiwan.

What I joke. I wouldn't have any part of that. I know some people will say "If it works like an American set who cares?" But a company like Matco should care more about their image than to sell Chinese tools. But I guess there's no shame anymore.

I think that if your going to pay the premium it should at minimum be made it Taiwan.. But hey there are lots of products that are made in China that still have great quality. Not particularly tools, but other products. Maybe this set is one of them.. It belongs to a coworker.. However I think if I were him and I paid a premium for China made tools I would get more for my money at Sears or HF.

Yeah, better off with Gearwrench or HF at that point, I only buy Craftsman if it's American so I don't go to Sears too much, but I would definitely be writing a letter of disapproval to Matco if I got that set.

I understand that both Mac and Matco wanted something to compete with Blue Point. I've checked out both Mac's Expert and Matco's Silver Eagle stuff on the trucks and there's no way I'd pay what they want for mostly Chinese tools. Would go Gearwrench if I was looking for 2nd tier tools long before either of the other two

I think most of the US brands have a Taiwan/China label within them. Even Wright has the Cougar Pro stuff that I'm pretty sure is Taiwan.

Yep, lots of mainline Matco is going more Taiwan, so the second tier stuff is going China. Silver Eagle is current China Husky with an inflated price tag.

Matco does not make any of the tools they sell.. All of their tools are rebrands.. The worst part is they sell Chinese made tools at premium truck brand prices.. If anybody buys truck brand tools they know what I mean... Very expensive.. They could be selling you harbor freight tools at Snap-On prices... I guess there is no more shame...

I don't know why anyone is surprised that the silver eagle stuff is made in China.
As others have posted in many threads, MATCO only makes tool boxes. Everything else is made by someone else for them.
If you follow the many threads about ownership of apex tool group and the reduction of us manufacturing and the who makes what for who threads, you'll quickly see that MATCO really doesn't really have a domestic source for a lower price tool line. Hell, they are running out of domestic sources for their premium hardline but, that's another story.
All of the tool trucks have a value line of tools. All are imported. What's sad to me is that many techs aren't that familiar with the value line. What sells them on the value line is the buy them but, pay weekly payments while you use them credit, easy warranty through the dealer, truck to shop service, etc.
could they buy better or comparable tools much cheaper some place else? Perhaps but, those weekly payments are enticing if your credit *****, you have other life bills, etc. hell, a quick eBay search shows many sellers listing value line tools as the premium line for high prices.
All of the tool trucks are selling more imported tool these days. The customer needs to be able to determine the difference.

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone since its nothing new. Silver Eagle has always been Danaher/Apex imported products, before that it was GW rebrands. Husky only recently switched to Apex for their tools.

I also don't see how this is any more shocking or insulting to peoples senses compared to US based products off the truck. You can buy Proto (same sockets as MAC) for a fraction of the price or Williams (same sockets as Snap-On). Chinese or Taiwan rebrands should be no more of a surprise.

Husky is ok for the price. It is not ok at truck prices. Lol. Never really got behind Silver Eagle as a brand. I own very little Husky that is offshore produced. I do have a few pieces of older USA Husky in my tool box at work. It works. I don't complain. Lol.

I really don't mind Taiwanese made stuff. There is a lot of pretty solid, and serviceable tools coming from there. Especially at current prices. I pick and choose though. Got some Mac, and Gearwrench stuff that is Taiwanese. Works really well, and I trust it as much, if not more, than plenty of other things.

I've got a set of Matco ratcheting stubby wrenches. There are no stamps other than model numbers, Matco, and sizes. Nothing on there regarding where from. This makes me think that they were also made offshore. I don't like it so much when a tool company isn't transparent about where products get made. I don't despise all non-US made tools, but I sure like to know where it came from.

You don't always get what you pay for. Gotta be a smart shopper when it comes to tools and do some research or end up taken advantage of.

I'm curious about that ratchet. I wonder if it's a finer-tooth version of their old 36-tooth mechanism (as used in raised-panel Craftsman ratchets as well as old Silver Eagle and other Danaher/Apex brands) or if it's Apex's floating pawl mechanism in a Craftsman-lookalike body (much like the new 75-tooth Craftsman ratchets).

The Silver Eagle 3/8 is 60 tooth count and I believe the 1/4 as well.

Well, not everyone is smart. Half the population is dumber than average. Stuff like this exists for those kind of folks. Always thought the Silver Eagle line was about the worst value in tools. Go buy some Sears Evolve or better HF. Kind of like the Caddy Cimerron. Remember that? A caddy based on a a junk econo box. And you know what, they found 132,000 idiots to buy them.

I have a set of Gray Pneumatic sockets, made in Taiwan. They have a black finish and are like a thin impact socket. Their magnetic sockets smoke Snap On's and their universal impact sockets are equal to Snap on, but you can buy a set for the price of 3 Snap On universal impacts.

I have a set of 1/4 & 3/8" in my at home/road box. Also bought a few 1/2" sockets for the bigger sizes.
