Three years ago I decided to upgrade my cheap, HF collection ($15 6-8 years ago and still works) with a quality grinder so I bought a Metabo W 780. It was working great until a few days ago when I noticed the rpms were lower than normal and without any other warning, it just quit. I checked Metabo's website and it appears to be out of warranty so now I'm trying to figure out if it's worth repairing or do I just chunk it into the trash. Assuming when I contact Metabo they reiterate the grinder is out of warranty so if I decide to repair it, can anyone give me an idea of what parts typically need to be replaced in these grinders and will it be easy to repair it myself?

If I decide to trash the grinder, I'd like to hear suggestions for a replacement. For the money, it's hard not to go back to HF but they don't run as smooth as the quality tools and at the end of the day, my hands can tell the difference.

It could be an easy fix, you just never know. I would enter the symptoms and model into Google and see what turns up. I have an ancient Makita that has seen amazingly hard use and shows no signs of slowing down, but to be honest, the grinder that currently gets the best reviews seems to be the Metabo.

I'm willing to bet its the brushes. I've heard of metabo's being used heavily in commercial industries who, when they die, will rebuild them and sent right back into service.

That being said, I also believe theres different grades of metabo. You can buy overseas made ones now (I think even online through home depot), and ones made at their home plant (germany?).

Rebuild it if you can and keep on truckin

id be surprised that the problem is brushes. never wore out a set, and ive run alot of power tools hard in the past 40 years.
depending on the model, and it doesnt seem to have one according to the ereparts link, metabo seems to use ****** electronic boards in their tools. i have killed half a dozen metabos with those boards

Okay, here's the deal....the brushes were gummed up so after cleaning everything with lectra-motive cleaner, it running good as new!

So much for buying what I thought was designed and made in Germany. If I paid closer attention to the label, I would have seen the Made in PRC. I paid roughly $60 +/- which is comporable to Dewalt so I'm not going to whine too much. Before I posted my question I honestly thought the grinder was trash but with y'alls feedback, I repaired my first grinder. Now I'm kicking myself because I tossed a 7" grinder with the same symptoms in the trash a few years ago.....live and learn. Thanks for the help!!!

Easy, and cheap fixes are the best fixes.

Even though it was manufactured in China, I am sure it was designed, engineered and spec'd through Germany. Assuming the proper quality control protocols are in place, all should be fine.

I just ordered a new bearing for my Bosch grinder and by time I added some other soft parts to the cart and payed for shipping, I was up to $30. The cost of a new grinder (same model) with shipping included from Amazon is $49. :headscrat

No dealings with chicom Metabo, but for the German made jobs they do a great job supporting their products. We service allot of them ourselves. Have been buying Metabo since the square bodies and keep going back because nothing compares.
