oh..... i forgot to include the reason I am calling it the "Mog Cabin".

The most recent addition to the collection is a 1971 Mercedes Unimog. I am going to wait until the work is done to move my other toys in, but I can't keep this thing at home.

A few updates....

1) I moved my pool table to the garage. I got this table from grandpa in 1997. He traded a cow for it over 90 years ago. Not a fancy table, but a nice old Brunswick.

2) My son no longer uses his pedal car so I am converting it to a light to go over the table.

3) A new (to me) beck speedster.

4) A vintage Porsche Service sign.

My Christmas present this year is a new LS engine and new trans for the ‘87 Grand Wagoneer.

I had hoped to get more stuff done to the garage this year, but as a Chicago Bears fan I am used to “there is always next year” way of thinking.

Very lucky...... lucky that my wife encourages me to spend time and money in the garage, lucky to have a job that affords me the means to buy toys, and lucky to have the health to enjoy it.

I have simplified the garage recently getting rid of a couple of less practical and costly cars (such as the Aston Martin). I think the Jeep with a modern drive line will be loads of fun, I suspect I will use it more in the next year than I have in the last 10 years.

I know his house. I’m in Edison Park walk by his house with my dog often.

I replaced the 8’ fluorescent tubes with LEDs (glad I put them on dimmers). Also put in a 96” fan (wanted a Big **** Fan, but Couldn’t make the math work). Also hung a fender from a 1960s Mercedes.

My only regret - that I waited 6 years to change the lights.

Spent a few hours this weekend starting to build a closet, I have accumulated too much stuff. Trying to make the exterior look like an old barn. Have it mostly sided, once I finish the trim I’ll hang the barn doors. The wall is 12 feet wide, 9.5 tall on sides and 11 feet tall in the
Middle.


Looking for ideas on what kind of sign would look good across the top of the barn wall? Suggestions?

If I can think of something better ill move my Mobil Pegasus.

I almost done with the exterior of the closet. I have to finish the windows (I have been replacing the panes with mirror, and using a combo of paint and stain to try to make it look more like the pre-finished weather siding - still some work to do here, but I am experimenting).

Also had a slight math error on rollers for doors, I wanted them centered on the outer board of the door. In hindsight, they are too close to the edge so the wheels touch before the doors do, leaves a gap of about an inch. Need to figure out a workaround.

I’m thinking about a new interior for the grand wagoneer over the winter. Any reaction to plaid?

Thanks AK Jim for taking a look. It has come along way since I got it (initial pictures when I bought it still show in the first few posts - kinda bummed I lost some in the middle with the collapse of tinypic) wish I was able to get stuff done a little faster, but so be it.

Once you get a functional place there is definitely less push to do the finish work. At least that’s the way I am.

Been a slow year for garage projects. I did sell a couple of cars given the frothy car market. So with the space i decided to store one of my boats myself this year and save the storage costs.

it is a triple cockpit with a modern V8.

I decided to start 2022 with a small project…. We are renovating our home kitchen and the old sink and faucet were sitting in the junk pile. However at the garage I only have 1 small sink, so historically filling a bucket was a real challenge.

so I decided to take the old sink/faucet and get a new sink base/counter from Home Depot. I still need to finish a few details…. But think it will be a nice improvement. Sink is deep enough I can fill a bucket and faucet pulls out. Will also offer some storage underneath.

I havent updated in a long time, as there was nothing to report (other then a few new cars). Over the holidays I decided that I wanted to build a 19x16 loft in the back of my garage, with the plan to move my office and poker table upstairs.

So the first thing I had to do was move the barn wall that I built about 4 years ago. I decided to flip it 90 degrees, and move toward the bathroom. When I am all done you can go through the barn doors and will have the entry to the bathroom on your right and the stairs up to the new loft on your left. Given that I am using some 20' LVLs (heavy) I hired 2 helpers for a day.

My plan calls for building the loft in 2 sections, both 8' deep. It took my one afternoon to move the barn, and then about 6 hours last Sunday to build the first section of the loft. So far so good.

The Mezzanine has 7' of clearance between the bottom of the beams and the floor. In the loft you will about 7' to the bottom of the rafters

Here are a couple of "occupants" that I acquired this past year - a 2024 Lotus Emira and a 2024 Boxster GTS 4.0.

Porsche has threatened to take the Boxster/Cayman platform electric, and so I wanted to get one of the last of the gas engine / manual transmission variants. I must say, this is probably the best Porsche I have owned (I have had other Boxsters, 911s and a 944). The technology inside is a little dated - which allows me to focus on what is happening on the outside, the engine, handling and overall feel is pretty awesome.

I had my helpers back for about 5 hours on Saturday and we got the second section of loft constructed. We also got much of the decking laid down. So far I'm pleased with the progress.

The center beam is 4 lvls that are glued and screwed to create one very beefy beam, and the span is about 19'. The front beam is a tripple LVL and the span is a little shorter (about 15' 6") as I am leaving space for a staircase.

So far the most difficult part was moving the ceiling fan so that it is not over the loft.

Once I move my desk up here I will have a pretty good view of the car on the lift..... I suppose I will have to put a different car on the lift, as my current theme on the 24 hours of lemons race car is probably not a safe backdrop for a work zoom call

This is my first crack ever at building stairs. I think they will be decent when done, but certainly they were complicated by some imperfect lumber (warped stringers and treads) coupled with my imperfect skill.

After I initially cut the stringer I didnt feel like they had enough "throat" left to be sturdy, so I sistered a 2x4 to the inside of each stringer - that helped but didnt totally solve it. Still not satisfied, I decided to add a 2x12 down the outside of my outer stringers - that seemed to do the trick. For rough treads I used some left over 2x10, but needed to fill in the back of each tread with a piece of 2x2. By the time I am all done you wouldnt be able to see the rough tread - I'm going to add some red rubber stair treads and then paint the sides and risers black.

Hopefully tomorrow I can make some progress on the a knee wall around the loft edge.

I still have work to do (especially organizing and cleaning).... but was able to move some stuff into the loft this week. Aside from 2 days of a helper time to set beams, this has been all me. I added several outlets in the loft. Likewise, I have ordered a 36K btu mini split, but it has not yet arrived.
