NAPA VAT82356 Compressor wiring

I have a NAPA VAT82356 compressor (five horse two stage). Had it about a year when I tried to start it one morning and it would just hum. I tried to see if something was wrong with the wiring and switched up the load / to motor wiring on the pressure switch as it looked backwards. Stupid I know as it previously worked and why would it not now?

That blew the start capacitor. I pulled both to test and the start capacitor was blown but not the run. My local electrical guys did not have a direct replacement, so I got one that worked but would not fit under the panel great and ordered the right part. No real change, so I thought I might have the run and start capacitors reversed. Nothing. I got the new replacement in, hooked it up and it ran for a few seconds before smoking from the new start capacitor.

I think in all my tinkering I might have screwed up the wiring at the pressure switch or reversed the run/start capacitors. Anyone have a wiring diagram or thoughts? I can take pics if anyone thinks it would help with diagnosis.

I puled both capacitors to make sure the wiring laid out in the right position.

So I hooked up the capacitor I got from my local guys which was too large to fit under the cover. The compressor seems to run fine, no smoke. I am scared to run it for very long that way. Hook up the replacement capacitor and it smokes like hell. Any chance the replacement cap was just bad? I am thinking about seeing how long it will run with the too large cap. The compressor has thermal protection and is on a breaker. Any ideas?

The worst that you will do is ruin an expensive motor, which you might already have by changing/messing with the wiring.
Thermal protection and breakers do not keep one from ruining a motor.

There is a chance that the start relay, which could be a centrifugal switch, might be stuck.
Save yourself some money and find a motor shop.

Yeah, trying to do that is tough in the hinterlands. I have a lead on a repair guy here in town, otherwise looks like I have to haul the motor up to Memphis, which I would hope would have one. I just wanted to make sure it was the motor and not the pressure switch causing the problem.

Interestingly, it doesn't look like the Napa branded compressors are using this set up anymore, so going back to the store that sold it was not good.

Does anyone know of a motor repair shop in Memphis or North Mississippi?

Repeatedly burning up start caps could definitely be a stuck centrifugal switch. Usually an easy fix if you feel confident removing the motor and opening it up

Thanks for the tip on the centrifugal switch. Since I have to take the motor off anyway I will crack open the back and see if maybe that is it.

It was the centrifugal switch. Piece of plastic broke and buggered up the switch. Green Electric in Memphis fixed it and replaced the cap for $140. I am hooking it back up tomorrow.
