That's so close to 5.5 that a 5.5 key would've fit. Ain't but a couple thousandths difference.

If the socket is between 5 and 5.5 it's probably 13/64". A rare size but not totally unheard of.

Sounds like a set screw. They tend to need the less common sizes, like the 1229/6050" key that wasn't included in my set... :eyecrazy:

the reason i ask is that i bought a troy bilt weed-eater and has the push to start option that i dont plan to buy as it is 40 bucks but it is a hex key on a electric motor so i thought i could just get a hex key and put it on my cordless and goto town. i don't mind pulling the string but hell if you can make it easier then why not.

just buy the starter unless your a reverse engineer that can calculate the torque of your drill not to strip the starter let alone a fastner that small>>> in which case the brain damage will be worth more then $40

i can only assume its a propritarty size so one cant do as your thinking

I bought my wife one of the starters they are sweet. Well worth the $35 I gave Lowes to get her to use the trimmer.

If you do please have someone video tape it and post a link to it here.

You make it sound like it is a difficult thing to do. You know that is the original started for cars and tractors.

The flywheel on my weedeater has a bolt. I often start it with the impact driver. Works like a charm.

I hope the guy figured it out now over 7 years later....

I suppose it's possible he finally figured out how to make it work and when it started the cordless started spinning around at engine rpm, causing the battery to fly off and hit him square in the forehead killing him instantly, or giving him amnesia so he could no longer remember his real name much less his GJ username and PW.

I sometimes start small engines when doing repairs and there not completely assembled with a cordless. What really helps is putting a ratchet adapter in between the power source and the hex or socket or whatever so when she starts running you don't get into trouble. I say keep at it & find a solution either a custom hex or find the right one.

klhitman . .
I don't think you need a 'hex' as much as you need a 'pent'!
My bro-'n-law was showing me the troybilt jump start today.
The battery wasn't charged on the 'jump' unit so he went
looking thru his various sized allen wrenches, both imperial
and metirc to find the size that fit into the jump-start 'socket'
of the weedeater. Nothing fit properly and in giving a it good
lookover, it is NOT a six-sided 'hexagon' shape but rather a
FIVE-sided 'pentagon' shape!
