well i'm bummed now. i'm getting ready to start my dream garage 30x30 with ten foot ceilings. i was going to buy a window/through wall unit for heat and a/c. i went to the appliance store to get prices and she told me that the heat was supplemental and wouldn't heat the whole thing by itself. she also doubted it would cool it either. ****. i thought i had this covered. i like the window unit because of ease of installation and price ($600 to $800) anyone have experience with one of these? what are my lower cost options? i see many threads on hvac, mini-split and others but i don't know what any of it means. the garage will be well insulated.

Do you have 220v for use near a window? If so, buy a huge window unit and have at it.
Also, are your walls insulated?

I'm working out of my shop 25x25 with a window unit, 110v. It is the largest BTU available for 110v outlet, 20amp circuit.

It does a good job of keep everything nice and comfortable.

I used a thru the wall ac unit in ohio,I believe it was a 20 or 18k,220volt.it would cool the whole shop,32x55. Had to run the furnace air handeler to keep it even,Its on the list of equipment to be pulled out and brought up here, the hole is built for it.

Maybe SHE didn't know what she was talking about.... It's not wise to take advise from just one person selected randomly at an appliance store. Do your homework, call the manufacturer or their rep.

If you can source a window unit that is rated for the square footage, a thru-the-wall mount is a good setup. I would do separate heat - gas or electric - because each will be best at what it does being dedicated units. I have a insulated 20x24 with a 12K 110V unit and it works great. An old 42" ceiling fan out of the house is mounted in the middle ceiling and helps circulation. I put in a 5Kw electric heater last year - it's wunderbar! :)

I have a 12'wx22'lx12'h with a 10'wx15'lx9'h coming off of the side. What size window A/C unit do you think that I would need?

Thanks,
Gary

Well, to start with, how about telling us where you are located. Heating and cooling requirements vary considerably depending on location.

Also, are you looking for the cheapest route possible? Is appearance a concern?

I think that most guys will agree with this statement: ANY heating or cooling is worlds better than NO heating or cooling.

I live in the Cincinnati Ohio area. I am looking for a window unit, I didn't know if a 110 unit would be enough or if I should go with a 220 unit. I thinking a 110 unit (up 1800 BTU I think) will be plenty but I wanted to ask just to be sure.

My shop is 24 X 30 divided into two rooms with a 6' door between them in the center of dividing wall. I have an 18,000 BTU 220v window unit mounted high in the wall directly inline with this door and it will successfully cool the whole shop (both rooms) even in the hottest days of our East Texas Summers. I have had this on now for the last three weeks. I keep it on most of the Summer to keep the humidity down and the shop ready for when I get out there. I keep the thermostat set at about 75 degrees when I am not out there and turn it down when I am out there working.
My shop is brick veneer and has R 19 walls and ceilings.

I've been in east Texas in the summer and that's a hell of a recommendation for an 18K window unit ;)

Thanks scooterseats for the reply. That is the way mine come in with a door way that is about 8' high and 10' wide. I am also thinking about mounting high (8 or 9 feet) and right in line with the opening. I wonder how much it will cost to run that thing all summer? I had thought about turning off when I wasn't out there and then back on 1/2 hour or so before I wanted to go back out. Keep it on all summer would be the best way though.

Thanks,
Gary
