Need some help with an old compressor

I was offered this compressor for free, couldn't pass it up! It appears to be plumbed incorrectly. Could anyone provide some guidance or insight? My initial thought is to set it up correctly and test it. If that works I will clean it up, break it down, and restore it.

What is an unloader? This is first "big" compressor i have ever owned. I dont know the terminology yet.

If the motor and the pump are both free-turning, and the pump has compression, and the motor doesn't smell 'toasted,; there probably isn't too-much you need to do to make it operable, besides belts, changing the oil, and wiring it up. If it's free, you won't be out much even if you do have to replace something.

I think the pipe air intake coming off one end of the head could use a filter. The manufacturer built the compressors of that vintage to last, and that appears to be a 'continuous duty' motor for use on a production environment.

Maybe yours don't have it. It is a valve that is activated when the pressure switch cuts out to dump the pressure from the line from the compressor to the tank so that the compressor doesn't try to start when it is under a load.....whew.

I have a filter for it, but the element probably should be replaced. It looks like the piping between pump and tank is cobbled together and incorrect. Does anyone have any resources or info for getting this setup correctly and safely?

The cast finned piece is a after cooler to help cool the air down before it gets in the tank. Not real effective but it does reduce the temp a little.

Looks like a water tank to me. I'd be leery.

The cat finned piece contains the check valve and has a port for a pressure relief valve or a pressure gauge.

I looked over the tank, I dont see an id plate or manufacturer info, no stamping, just a bare tank. There are no large inspection ports, so I shined a light through one of the open ports....looks surprisingly clean inside but would need a borescope to really verify. This tank feels solid and heavy but now i am starting to second guess it.

Currently I am thinking about hydrostatic testing the tank to 300 psi. If it holds pressure would it be safe to assume 150psi is safe?

200 psi seems to be more of a standard test for compressor tanks.

Still trying to identify this tank, found some clues that might help. Sticker residue left on tank says Wayne and the sticker was applied to indicate this was always a vertical tank. Found a stamp near one of the welds but I am not sure what it means. Anyone have any ideas?
