My wife told me we needed a gate or fence for each side of the house.
Of course I opened my big mouth and said "I can do that"
So I had just bought a welder and was a great way to learn how to weld.

So Sorry about the links for the pics, I dont know how to post them.

It started on a napkin in a truckstop.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._469258339446_673449446_6387722_1254787_n.jpg

then I make a ruff drawing and decided thickness and steel to use.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._469258349446_673449446_6387724_2896784_n.jpg

refined the design a bit
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._469258354446_673449446_6387725_7416471_n.jpg

made a board as guide
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._469258359446_673449446_6387726_6777585_n.jpg

tadahh we have one side done.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._469258364446_673449446_6387727_2866931_n.jpg

Of course things were not good enough, had to reinforce for the hinges, added a 2by2 square tubing each cide for the doors cleaned up the welds and primed it.

Next I will install and then separate the doors.
I'll cut it in the middle.

Ok ok the sandblast box looks like ****, I'll paint it later.

Thanks guys, Jack i've been following a lot of what you've done and it inspired me a lot .
My son is a welder and he thought me how to do it, just that part of the project was a thrill, the kid teaching his old man how!

Got to admit I had to grind a lot to clean up the welds, used a lot of welding wire LOL
but it's getting much better. .
Still got another to make for the other side of the house.
Things should go mucho smoother this time.

Wow nice job. I thought I did a good job on my gate by replacing a few rotted 6"x5' boards. No way Im gonna let my honey see this thread.

Allright, not completely finished but today we made progress.
4 holes , 12 bags of cement and she's in place.
I temporarly installed a few jacks to make sure she wouldn sink.
Gave it a few coats of paint and primer.

Tomorow I separate the doors in the middle ,they are still in one piece.

The cement is allready hardening and it's rock solid
Not bad , I'm pretty happy with the results.

You may be a beginner welder but you certainly have artistic talent. Really nice job.

Awesome job on your gate. Nice layout of how you planned out your project and actually executing it. Some times it is easy to draw out but not getting it to come out the same way. I have a hard time drawing it but can see it in my head.

Impressive yes!
imagine how much it would of cost you to have someone else make it. Plus this way you got exactly what you wanted. Even got a chance to get some bonding with your son.

BRAVO!

I don't know what brand of welder you bought, but you really ought to enter that into a DIY contest on the website of whichever brand you bought. Miller often has a project showcase contest; yours would win! For the 'first time at bat', you certainly hit a home run.

Gee never tought about that, LOL
It's a Lincoln 180 I bought while it was on sale.
I didnt use the gas sooo I used fluxcore, my son doesnt like the shielded wire but I'll get gas tanks later.

Thanks for the compliments guys.

I still have to make the other side and modify this one a bit.
Where the doors meet,in the middle, I have to install a 1 inch by 2 inch square tubing because, it's made with quarter inch by 2 inch flat bars and the parts bows a bit.
It will prevent the bow and I also want to separate the doors a bit, half inch, to quarter inch.
It will prevent the little fingers to get stuck between the doors when they close.

Impressive yes!

I have no idea how much it would cost me LOL.
Yes it was one project where we had a lot of fun doing.
Hard work but the payoff was the fact he was sooo proud to teach me about his trade.
Priceless!

nice looking gate good job
Thanks

You did one fine job on that. Smart of you to fabricate, then cut later to insure alignment during the install. My hat is off to you.
Thanks I wanted to make sure everything lined up and made 2 of each part, it was like a big puzzle cutting pieces

Wow - loks great. The design has a touch of exotic that I like. Coincidentally I am taking bids for my fence fabrication and install. About 550 linear feet worth.
