New Barn

We've got a new barn going up next month and I want to run power about 300' from the power pole. I want to do it right and run more supply than I'll need so I'm thinking two 100A lines - just like is run to the house. So my questions is this - which type of wire should I run? Any insight on what it would take to just have the power company run another pole? The barn is much closer to a different power pole than the supply pole for my house.

Thats a loaded question

Are you connecting to an existing meter pan, meter/disconnect or meter main combo panel?

for 100a, you will need #3 cu or #1 al but the 300' distance will necessitate upsizing the wire.

No way someone on the internet could tell you what your PoCo would charge to install another pole.

If the bar is closer to another pole, that may be a good route, however, if this will be a different service, then you may be charged at a higher rate. check with your PoCo first before choosing a route.

What kind of barn, and what's in it? If it's just hay and cows, your power requirements will be much lower than if it's a machine shop.

It's a pole barn with a few horse stalls and a tack room, but I want to be able to power a welder for misc. repairs of whatever broken equipment we may encounter.

How about a generator welder that you can take anywhere on your spread?

That would reduce the need for such a large supply to the barn.
