Hi All,
I'm glad I found this forum. I just purchased a 1942 Craftsman 103.0303 Drill press running for $200. I used it at work to drill a bunch of extruded 1 1/4" Aluminum radius tubing for a project. Drill press worked great until working on second to last piece and chuck just dropped off?. I looked and didn't see a keyway or pin to secure it?? It looks like a tapered fit? Any info on parts or help?

Welcome to the Forum South Western California.
All the better quality Drill Presses I have encountered have drill chucks mounted on a tapered arbor.
The taper on my chuck is a Jacobs taper and the Arbor is mounted in a Morse Taper spindle.

The taper is what hold it. You just need to get it in there the either give it a little hit with a rubber mallet/dead blow, or use the quill to press it in against something like a piece of wood.

The taper needs to be immaculate, on both the male and female, in order to lock. Any corrosion will be a surface deviation and lessen the locking ability of the taper. It's one of those things that may/may not be easy to accomplish. Some bearing retaining compound (Loctite green for example) may work. If it doesn't then the retaining compound will have to be removed so it's pristine surfaces. I had one particular problem with this at work one day, nothing I tried worked. In a last ditch effort I used some fine lapping compound to match the surfaces of male to female. When this showed matching surface patterns I put a thin file of the compound in, gripped the chuck, and ran it onto the spinning arbor until the friction on the arbor overcame the friction holding the chuck. The method was akin to friction welding and it did work. Not really on the recommended list but if all other attempts fail try this.
