Here's a before pic.

garage2.jpg

I plan to add drywall, closets to hide junk, a new workbench, and a slatted wall storage system one wall. Also do something with the floor.

I'll be adding pics and questions along the way.

Thanks to all for a great forum!

That space holds a lot of potential... Nice quad, and, nice tractor. What model is that tractor? We have the LX176, and have had it for 8 years now. It's never put a foot wrong...

Hey Snorvet. Temp must be dropping up in Illinois. See a few potted plants on the floor. I figure I got about another month before if freezes and my wife fills up my shop with the potted plants and trees off the front and rear porch. Then I get the joy of chasing lizards and frog around my shop :headscrat .

yeah- temp is about 35-40 at night, 50's during the day. Everything outside has moved to my garage including the tiki torches. I dont get to chase lizards and frogs though - maybe a few mice.

Here is a drawing. I'm trying to fit my pontoon boat in this garage (only in winter)with the other stuff. The boat doesnt have a trailer. I'm going to move it around on casters/dollies, etc. Its going to be tight. My workbench is going to have to be on wheels, so I can move it around the garage to fit the boat in.

The workbench is shown in the "summer" position on the drawing and would be to the right of the boat in winter - about where the wheelbarrow and trailer are. The wheelbarrow and trailer will be hung on a new slatted wall system on the right wall in winter. The shelves shown in the front of the garage are now there, but I'm wrapping the entire garage with drywall, and hiding the front shelves with bifold doors.

More pics and questions will follow thru the construction phase.

Any ideas for a workbench with drawers about 6'x2'x3' high on wheels?

Thanks

Snorvet, HD sells a wall mounting kit for wheelbarrows. I just picked one up yesterday, frees up floor space to store another item underneath where the wheelbarrow sits on the wall. I'm pretty lucky because I have a shop attached to the garage where I store all the out doors stuff and do my "dirty work" (grinding, sawing, sanding, etc.)
Of course you may not need it if your drawing there is just a generalization, but worth checking into.

Thanks,

I'll stop by hd and pick up the mounting kit. I'm also going to wall mount the John Deere trailer. I'll probably mount a sheet of plywood or something similar on the wall where I hang these things, since I thing they will ding up the wall over time

Yup, hang up what you can, I might figure out a shelf to stack the mowers, maybe even over the blower, make the table saw fit in to/under a front shelf as you would have to pull it out to use it anyway and like you said hang the trailer or back it in under the other shelf, could even nose the front of the tractor into a cubby under a shelf. I would put a workbench along the wall where you have the mowers so its where you enter the door instead of jambed at the end of the building in front of the boat. You didnt say how much land you have or zoning problems but I might be thinking of how else to store the boat. You already need casters,, I have made some simple covers, you could even use painted sheet metal and make up a cover for the boat,, or add a lean to. If zoning wont allow it there is nothing stopping from covering the boat. Even brackets and some really good tarp. I might go so far as to put the mowers and some of the summer tools on the boat under the cover for the winter. This is just me rambling but sometmes it pays to think out of the box a bit. This place looks wide enough but the shelves on the bench on the end takes up length, make the shelves in the front narrower. I bet you could get a car in there if you had to. Some overhead shelving on the walls may be useful, shelf where the saw is, tool box integrated under the bench.

The scribbles are overhead shelves, the big red lines are shelves and I didnt put up the stuff that could be hung or stacked. Even leaving the boat in look at the gained space without having to move the bench around for the seasons.

Why not nose the boat in to the right and swing the rear over towards the wall. It could go right against the wall. Throw the fenders over the side if you want. The push mowers and lawn cart could be stowed on it. If the cart won't fit or is too unwieldy, I think most of them stand up when placed tailgate to the floor.

thanks for your help! I've changed the plan to wall mount as much as possible and turn the boat to the right. See below

A little background - the boat is now stored offsite but I want it at home. The garage is too small for a boat trailer, so I'll borrow a trailer and just store the boat on casters in my garage. This is my detached garage. I also have a 30'x30' attached that I can store the ATV, riding mower and snow blower in the winter if I have to. The detached garage will be more useful in the summer when the boat is in the water.

I have finished the drywall (not taped yet) and will post pics tomorrow. I think I'm going with a vct floor. I'm thinking of adding something behind the wall mounted trailer and wheelbarrow to protect the drywall.

sberry-

I like your idea of more shelves above but I cleaned and threw so much stuff away that I gained about 50% shelf space already so I wont need more shelves.

Storing the boat outside is ok by zoning (5 acre lot), but not ok by the wife. She doesnt want to see it

I'm finally back in the garage and made a little progress. Finish painting this weekend, then install remaining lighting and geartrack wall system and then epoxy.

Finally - today was move-in day. I still have to install cabinet doors on my upper cabinets and some trim painting to do.

Here's some pics:

Maybe you've stated it earlier, so sorry if you did, but what kind of track system is that on the wall?

If I hadn't seen all of your pictures and read your posts, I wouldn't believe that was the same garage. Very nice job!

thanks guys - its unbelievable what drywall, fresh paint, epoxy floor, and good lighting can do.

I apologize if you mentioned this already, but I didn't see it anywhere. How big is the garage?

Thanks. I may have to stop and get some this weekend. BTW, it looks great!

<edit>

I just tried to find some of this stuff...looks like it's not readily available - most places require special order/shipping. Where did you get yours?

BMW - got mine from The Garage Store and More in Naperville, Il - but Sears sometimes has them in stock.

Here is a pic of the Gearwall system I just put up. It comes in 8' x1' sections that fit together to cover a whole wall. I used 4 pieces.

Ok, I just got my GearTrack Packs, but they didn't come with what appears to be those endcaps. Those are endcaps on the tracks, correct?

Time to make some calls....

reminds me how nice it is to have nice mild, sunny winters in So California - I can actually park all 3 cars in my garage and dont have to worry about the snow blower and such.
