Bear with me here... I have a 100A feed to a well house about 400' from the house. It's 2/0 AL run in conduit. They cut it kinda short in the well house so the can is tucked low down in a corner and its a PITA to get to. Why they ran a 100A feed to a well house that only needs ~30A is beyond me. Anyhow, I'll take it and the new shop is going to be sited about 80' from the well house. I only need maybe a 60 or 70A 220v feed.. I figure I have a couple options - leave the box where it is, stick a breaker in there (there's room) and run a correctly sized feed to the shop sub panel. Option 2 is turn the well house box into a junction box, splice the 2/0 and put a bigger can where its supposed to be higher up on the wall so I can actually work in it. Then run a feed to the shop. Another option I thought about but don't know if its within code or worth it is to splice the 2/0 in the well house and instead of feeding the shop from the well house box, bring a feeder straight over the shop from the splice and run a main breaker box in the shop. Thoughts? I'll post some photos later when I walk up there.

so how is the pump circuit protected currently? is there a breaker in this current panel?
Yes there is a 30amp 220v breaker for the well pump and a 20amp 120v for the booster in that well house box plus a 15a 120v for a single receptacle and light.. Hanging off of a 100A main breaker at the house with 2/0 in between. Well house box is an 8 space unit so there's some room.
