I have no experience with concrete or coatings at all except for studying the guides at HD next to the quickrete and Behr products. I am looking into starting a business as something to do on the side but I don't want to use the HD/Lowe's products. I want a local manufacturer (Las Vegas) if there are any. Hopefully one with a training class. That way at least if I decide it is not for me, I can figure it out at the class before I spend a few grand getting it up and running. Any advice (besides "Don't do it") would be greatly appreciated. Who to use nearby? Best training classes? etc.

Thanks!

Have you done your own floor yet? That'd be a great place to start. We have around 300 DIY projects here alone, search and you'll see that everyone is pretty happy with their results. Keep in mind that most of them are on their first floor, and have no on-hands training. There are some techniques and tricks that you just need to learn from putting down coatings, but to just start it's not that tough.

I think the real challenge is mostly basic business stuff - marketing, bookkeeping etc. You also need to find out what licensing, permits, insurance etc you'll need for your market. We work with a few installers, some are doing really well after just a couple of years - others are still struggling. The difference is knowing their market and customers and figuring out how to get in front of them. The actual installation isn't that big a deal after just a few jobs.

We've looked at developing a more formal installer network, but the current economic climate has a lot of folks spooked, and frankly we're doing just fine without taking on the additional work load for now.

But I really think the best thing to do is your own floor, or find a couple of friends who want their floors done and help 'em out. We have a few clients on this forum who have done their own floor, and ended up doing floors of people who saw the results. Before you commit a lot of time or money make sure that you enjoy the process. Honestly I think that will give you a better idea of the business than a training course initially, plus even if you find it's not to your liking at least you'll have some coated floors to show for your time and money. If you enjoyed the work, those training courses will still be there.
