Need some help. Picked up an old intercity furnace off kijiji a while ago finally got the gas all hooked up to it but now i cant get the pilot light to light. There is a pilot light adjustment on the gas valve tried it nothing. Pulled it right out and when i push down on the valve gas comes out so I put it back on an pulled the line off the valve that goes to the pilot and nothing comes out of there when i push down the valve. I have the 110 volt hooked up but havent done the 24v control side to the thermostat yet. That shouldnt have any effect on the pilot light right? any ideas? Thanks

Do you have the right fuel, propane or natural gas? The 24v control wire probably shouldn't make a difference but if it's electronic ignition it might. Could just be plugged up with spider eggs or something, clean it out being careful not to enlarge the orifice.

Garageman if you remove the pilot tube from the gas valve and get gas out of the gas valve but dont get gas out of the pilot with it hooked up . Then your problem is a clogged pilot orfice . You can try to clean it out or just grab another pilot assembly at a local HVAC supplier .

It is natural gas and its not electronic ignition its probably 20 years old. Took the tube off the gas valve and no gas comes out of the valve. Gas comes out of the pilot light adjustment screw if i take it out but not out of the pilot output. I got the furnace for free because the guy that gave it to me had two furnaces in his house and one crapped out so he replaced both. This one was still working fine when he had it taken out which is why im thinking its something i did but they arnt that complicated.

If you haven't hooked up the thermostat wire you are not going to get the furnace to light. Because the 24 volt curcuit is open, the furnace thinks that the room is warm enough and won't light.

He's talking about the standing pilot, not the main burner.

I dont want to cut a hole in the roof and permantly mount the thermostat if the heater doesnt work. I hooked up the themostat temporarily and the valve clicked open but still no gas to the pilot system. I think im going to have to take the top off the gas valve and see if there is a blockage inside.
