I was just reading threw Storing Nuts and Bolts ? (Great  thread) I did not want to Hijack that thread But was wanting to know where do you all get your Nuts and Bolts ? I am tired of HD Lowe's and the local hard wear store. I am nervous about buying that stuff on the net without a recommendation.

honestly I would imagine any savings through an internet order would be eaten up by shipping unless you were buying several hundred dollars worth and they included shipping, after all steel is heavy.

I get my bulk stuff from tractor supply and any specialty stuff from my local Ace Hardware

Gardner-Wescott is a great source with no minimum purchase. Been buying from them or at least 10 or 12 years.

If you're just building shelfs or cabinets......things of that nature, I dont think you need the high price stuff. If you're building cars, planes or trains......then you need to go ahead and pay the man!!!!!!

I buy a lot of stuff from Fastenall but they are local to me and I don't pay for shipping. I'll also use TSC for some larger grade 8 stuff that I dont need in quantity. I'll also buy in bulk for common sized nuts, flats and locks to cut cost as well.

Mcmaster is my first preference for online purchasing but the quanities are always in bulk/semi bulk.

I agree I hate buying nuts & bolts from Lowes or HD but of the two Lowes is better IMO. My first preferences for buying nuts & bolts locally is OSH, Do-It-Best, & a small independent hardware store that carries the same stock as Do-It-Best.

My Ace Hardware is actually really good. I also have a specialty hardware store (local, family owned) that has never not had something I needed.

If I need higher quality and larger quantities I get it from Bolt & Nut supply co. Stuff I'm less worried about quality I get from TSC. If I need REALLY high quality I get it from Aircraft Spruce.

I still buy a lot of my nuts and bolts from Home Depot, but I buy them by the box now. If I need a few of a specific size, I go ahead and buy a box of 100. That way, I can stock up with the sizes I'm most likely to use in my shop. The 'bulk' box price is significantly cheaper than the individual, or 5-pack, nuts and bolts.

If I need specialty stuff, there is no place like Ace Hardware.

I may end up buying a few 'kits' from one of the big bolt houses online (for a certain price, you get the metal parts storage case and whole assortment of sizes of commonly-used hardware).

In general, though, I'd rather support a local store (which is why I like to buy from Ace, when possible...as close to a local store as I get for hardware). While their 'by the piece' hardware selection is very expensive (but also very extensive), if you go to the counter and ask for a 'bulk' quote, they will call their hardware supplier and get you a 'by the 100' price for whatever you want.

If you live near Sacramento, CA, there is a place called "Blue Collar Hardware." They sell fasteners in bulk at 'by the pound' prices.

i started my collection by buying cabinets loaded with bolts.. i sifted through **** and stuff i wanted to keep.... now i go to estate sales/ garage sales, i shy away from the "misc" stuff and tend to buy the stuff that are only in the original boxes. thus im not buying reused stuff

Years ago, I did find a place on eBay that had free shipping for orders over $50 that did not exceed the Priority Mail Flat Rate box limit. I think you had to buy in quantities of 50. Stocked up on course and fine nuts and washer.

Luckily, I have a real fastener store near by, Tradesman Fasteners. Great for small quantities. They carry grade 8 and stainless, US, SAE and metric. If you are paying cash, they round down to an even dollar or might even through in some odd stuff, no charge. (I think those small sales go in the coffee fund :bounce: )

Okay experts ! I have been looking high and low for 2.5mm x 7.0mm Phillips flat head machine screws (computer stuff). Any sources ?

We have a local place called Hiawatha Fasteners that is great for any kind of fastener you could imagine. Lowe's and HD have over priced low quality stuff. TSC has some better quality, but they are massively over priced.

Macmaster-Carr and MSC.

If you get the grade 8 or 9 bolts from Macmaster, they will be Lake Erie brand which are made in Canada or the US. I believe the same is true with MSC (it was 3 years ago).

I will also get them from Bowman. Those I will get the Bowmalloy bolts which are also grade 8 and US made. Most of the regular and locking nuts are also from Bowman.

McMasterr Car for specifics I can't find locally (especially bulk). Grade 5 and 8 local but if I need a lot, I'll order bulk. MCC is good, use them a lot.

What I keeep on hand I have bought at TSC, grade 2 stuff. It works for the general stuff I do. I think their price is $1.99lb but I'd have to double check that. If I need a grade 5 or 8, I buy what I need at TSC.

A certain size thread/bolt diameter, material or head, I go to the hardware store.

Fastenal, doesn't impress me and I think they are too expensive.
