old school pendant lights

Haven't decided if these are going in the shop or the basement but couldn't pass up the deal

all 3 for $30, they are old from a local warehouse, I did have to supply my own ladder and take them down.

I just love the Porcelain, You can feel the difference between the re-popped lights and these. I also like the fact that I got the pipes and the mounts with them.

That's a good find. The porcelain ones are still going for 35 - 40 dollars apiece around here at the flea markets and swap meets.

When I was building my garage in '07 I had a friend who's a lighting designer try to find me some of those (big mistake). I didn't know what they were called and she kept coming up with the wrong thing until I discovered the phrase "barn light". After I told her that she found some that were perfect. They were only $300 ea. I needed 6.

I ended up with cheap copies of what you got and paid $40 for each. So you definitely earned a "You ****!"

I sent a bunch to the scrap yard years ago after a relighting project, 1943 vintage in perfect condition, they were made by the Smoot-Holman Company & Westinghouse, both are defunct & they all had mogul base lampholders.

I turned mine into "Goose Neck Barn Lights". I found about a dozen at a swap meet this summer and used 4 of them and sold one to my neighbor so far.

Are those staandard size sockets?
It looks like you are going to need some long necked bulbs.
Or mod them some way to lower the sockets.

They require long necked bulbs, but you can use a extender to use reg bulbs.

Well I decided that they belonged in the shop, so on Friday I stopped at HD on the way out there and bought a few parts.

3 of these

3 of the bulb extenders
and 3 12" 1/2 black pipe (I decided that it was just easier to use new pipe rather than cut and rethread the old pipe.

First up was to rewire all three of the lights, they came apart much easier than I thought they would.





Once I got every thing apart I cleaned them up and painted the pipes and the swivel sockets that mount to the ceiling boxes.

Then I installed the new wire in the sockets.




While I waited for the paint to dry I installed the 3 new boxes over the table saw and fished a new line to one of the ceiling outlets controlled by a switch.

Dumb me I didn't get any pics of the finished product. I used 42 watt (150 watt eq) cfl's and the out put is perfect.
