My friend gave me a working Mutsubishi 24k mini split system that was a good working take out replaced with a newer or higher efficiency system at his work. The compressor unit is a PUY-A24NHA4, it is cooling only and 16.8 SEER. Lines were cut and crimped on the inside and outside units when removed been sitting in my shed for almost two years.
I'm not huge on air conditioning, but if the unit is free and only costs a few hundred to install I figured it might be nice for the 90*-100* humid summer days. I think this unit is a little oversized for my garage. I have a 24'x30' with 10' ceiling in NJ. R13 walls, R22 ceiling, insulated 16'x7' door.
I'm thinking it's time to install this thing or get rid of it if it's not worthwhile or not appropriately sized. Charts and calculators I've looked at indicate an 18k unit would be about right. Granted, that doesn't account for opening the rollup door and having quick recovery, or going out to the garage on a 95* day and cooling down quick.
I have a 45k unit heater that works fine for heat, so I don't need heat. 45k seemed about right by the calculators for the space and it does fine at 72* set temp but it takes a while to recover when opening the door. If I were to do it again I'd go a little bigger.
Is this mini split worth installing? If I hang the inside and outside units and have power outside ready to go at a disconnect, how much should I expect to pay a professional to run lines and charge the system? The alternative if I really want air conditioning might be one of the precharged DIY 18k systems, which seem to be around $1,600 but are 20+ SEER. Not sure how much that might save per year or if it even matters for weekend and occasional weeknight garage use. Bonus is these units function as heat pumps too, but I'm imagine my NG unit heater is more cost effective for heating. What do you guys think?
