One more ratchet question Hi-shear

Shopping in usual place today and found a Hi-Shear 3/8 drive ratchet with no friction ball. Never had one. Design is new to me. It has a single hole through the center of the drive all the way to through but dosen’t appear to be broken.
It’s clearly not designed to hold a socket on the inside of the hole like a pass through. So what’s up with it? Were the sockets designed to fasten through the head of the ratchet?

I had only seen that brand in my dads tool box. I had never seen a ratchet before. He assembled aircraft working on B52, then B1, and finally B2 stealth bombers.

They are used to install nuts or collars on hiloks. Fasteners used on airplanes.

Used for eddie bolts..Three lobed socket for the nut. When the required torque is reached, the ears on the nut round off and no more torque can be applied. At the same time, it deforms the nut body to the fastener and locks then together.
