I know it's necessary to close or lock threads at times.

The request is this - Once it's locked, could you please post a comment to that thread at the end - nothing long, extravagant, or detailed - why the thread was locked or closed?

Otherwise... it looks like someone got a bee in their bonnet, didn't like something about it, and just arbitrarily decided to close it.

Takes about 10 seconds after the lock. Would maybe guide us what was unacceptable in the post so it's not repeated by others. And would answer a lot of questions why that action was taken.

Thanks,
Sus @ the Forge

I know what you mean - it would be nice from the OP's point of view (and indeed the general readership) to know why their thread was locked or deleted, but I think the mod's valuable time is more productively spent on policeing the forum rather than providing explanations for their actions.

I think another consideration is that there will inevitably be some people who either don't agree or want to debate the reason for closure and the fact that the thread has been closed denies them that oportunity.

So they either feel a sense of resentment that their voice was not heard - or they go on to start another thread to argue their point - which rarely leads to any constructive conclusion.

No - I think it's much better to just lock or delete the thread with no reasons given and everybody move on - lifes too short .... :)

I do at times, other times I don't. The general forum population knows the rules regarding politics/religion. They are the fast track to get a thread closed/deleted/locked or have it edited.

I closed one yesterday, it was nipped by one Mod and later in the evening, I tried to edit it again but decided to close it. I figured it (thread) was given a second chance once and if guys didn't learn the first time, it was done.

Sometimes, I believe it's better if it's left unsaid who closed a thread. If a Mod is doing his job, moderating a forum, what kind of reputation do you think they are going to get on the forum ?

I've been a mod on other boards. Posting who closed it and why only serves to provide a target for people who think they've been wronged and want to complain about it. Board rules are clear enough, and the reason why a thread might be closed or deleted already detailed in the FAQ and user agreement. If you think your thread had merit when it was closed, PM the staff and ask ... but keep it PM. Remember, the staff here are all volunteers. If they feel unappreciated, they quit, and then so go the valuable posters .. leaving the board to die. Seen it all too many times.

I had a thread closed/ deleted on me. A PM would have been nice. I got in contact with mod and found out who deleted it and why. Free parking is good for topics off the garage theme which is needed. I believe that the GJ is self policing in that we can usually deal with the person causing issues before mod gets involved.

I think it would be a nice thing to have a mod who closes or deletes a thread to send a pm to the OP. One of my threads was closed and I have no idea why, I'm guessing that there were some posts deleted that broke the rules.

I think that like others have said if a mod posts why a thread is closed then it leaves them open to attack unless it was a very general post such as "Thread closed due to banned content." making sure to not list any person for having broken the rules.

I've modded some other boards as well - one in particular that makes the verboten stuff here look like sunday-school tea lady light conversation...

I used to clamp threads every so often - I'd lock them, then drop something like "TOS Violation - Sec. 13.4(a) Racist Violence" or whatever reason it was killed at the bottom. That's it. No name calling, no snotball "how dare you" stuff... I might edit the post to *** out the offensive stuff, I might even send the offender a PM (usually would, but those were customarily ignored) but that was it. If they kept up the a$$h@ttery, they might get a time out, or if it was really egregious (we used to have threats between members and occasionally, stalkers) one of the admins would give them a gift of letting them find a different board to spew upon.

If they thought of me as the "Regent Female Dog Spawn-from-heck Anatomical part" I didn't care. I loved the board, but I was there to do a job as well. --shrug--

Ergo my comment / request. And it looks as if the mods/admins (or a couple at least) agreed on a couple closers (and, er, hosers... --giggles--). :D

Agree with Professur, Would add that it does not really matter, we don't really need to know. There will be new threads tomorrow and we can all read and comment on those. None of this is life or death. Have another drink and clink another link.

Some times a topic closed or removed simply does not deserve a response as to why it was closed or removed. I often wonder if some have not read the rules. Often a PM as to why it was closed only upsets many and rude responses are not called for.

I joined this forum as it is about what I enjoy and that is the space I enjoy in my Garage / Shed and I do not want to read about as an example some one that has pierced the ears on a Cat. Oh and by the way piercing the ears on a Cat is NOT what I park in my garage.

If I had my way I would delete many a topic in Free Parking as they are simply not what the forum is about but at the same time I respect many have questions and that is the only section suitable. I agree with Ryan about many topics in that section and at the same time see a need for Free Parking to be seen when logged on only.

I also agree with what NUTTSGT posted as often I can see something has been moderated and with me being in a different time zone to many of you I can see what has gone on and like Eric stated many times you see a topic is not worth it so it is closed, removed or deleted and do not forget the Moderators on this forum are simply just like every other member on this forum and here to enjoy the Garage - Shed. What we do as Mods is just keep the place respectable, drama free and with no arguments.

Yes well it does not matter about up late or anything as it is posted on the forum and I do believe the topic is still visible.

You had some odd links in that so I removed them. ;)

No problem on the links... Cannot even recall what they were.

It seems to me that if you post questionable links that a mod subsequently has to delete - and you subsequently cannot recall what they were - then maybe you could help the mods (and lessen their work load) by perhaps giving a tiny bit more consideration to what you were posting in the first place .... :)

My brain is a busy place. If someone could remind me what those links were, I would certainly give it consideration.

You underlined cats ears and that made for a questionable link to a very odd site. I take it you did not know you made that link.

Go Easy. We all make mistakes. It is the deliberate and intended posts that create problems.

Some of these intended posts creating drama are simply not worth responding to and why many of the Mods just remove them.
