Outside Security Light Recommendations

Sparky’s and Lighting experts of GJ….

I need to replace my outside light after 8 years of use. It just goes on and off every 10 minutes now at night. My past shop did this and instead of troubleshooting it I just replaced it due to it being so high up.

Question I have… I would like to update this to newer technology (led or?) What I have now is Yellowish glow sodium light I think.

Cost is not really a problem; I want dependability as to not have to go back up the ladder for awhile.

e-conolite has nice selection I like the dusk to dawn but they seem to be out of stock alot.

8 yrs old on the same bulb?

I bet you got a bulb on the way out. They will go on and off as they die. It would be cheaper to buy a replacement bulb than a replacement fixture


LED technology is fine. Decent quality fixtures start around $100 and go up, with quality and light output. Try to stay in the name brands, like Cooper/Lumark/Crouse Hinds , RAB, Phillips, as opposed to some of the unknowns that might be cheaper.

The Lumark Crosstour LED is a decent product that wont break the bank. There are several wattages. This is just the first one I found on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008KNOTPG/?tag=atomicindus08-20 You might get a better price elsewhere.

Crosstour MAXX are a higher wattage versions of the above models, more suited to wide areas with the refractive lens option

Your sodium light you have now is about the cheapest source of lumens/$ when it comes to fixtures. Being a very established technology, you can get higher quality sodium lights for the same cost as entry level LED. Also LED tends to be more directional than a traditional sodium wallpack so thats something to consider if you want a wide spread of light. Some LED fixtures focus their light more than others or offer a couple choices in cutoff/spread as well.

Please note there is Low Pressure Sodium LPS, and High Pressure Sodium HPS, which are yellow, and amber colored, there is no "sodium" lights, the OP appears to have HPS, based on the amber color in the photo, and the " It just goes on and off every 10 minutes now at night." is end of life lamp cycling, replace the lamp and it goes away.

I bought an LED dusk till dawn light at home depot...

I am impressed by how bright it is.

The best part is you don't have to mess with it

I just put a piece of tape over the light switch

And every night it works

Like Magic.

I may be over complicating this. If a High Pressure Sodium HPS bulb is all I need and get back the light I had, That may be the best solution.

Thinking about the coverage area It was quite good and pleasant. A white,bight and focused area (like LED) may look too industrial .

What’s a good resource for HPS bulbs and how do Identify mine? It would be nice to do that without getting a ladder out. (wishful thinking I know)

Take it down and run it over to a local electrical supply house. There's several in Greenville. They will all have one on the shelf.

Since you had the word “security” in your title, I’d like to add the Ring security lamp and camera for your consideration. We have recently added a Ring doorbell camera and security system to our house. I added a spotlamp to the driveway, sort of like your photo. You have to add an app to your phone, but now when we get a delivery to the house my phone chimes or vibrates that someone is in the driveway. The video is clear and easy to see. At dark the LED spotlamp comes on, as does the video recording. Overall it is easy to install and just needs a WiFi signal to work the camera.
