Painting Concrete Kick Walls

I have already finished the drywall walls and ceiling in my garage, and I'm planning to install racedeck on the floor. That will leave the concete kickwalls (house and garage foundation) exposed. I was thinking I would just paint it so it would look finished and contrast the walls and floor.

I have never painted concrete before.

What are the basics I have to do as far as cleaning, priming, type of paint to use, how many coats, type of roller or brush, etc.?

There will be no walking or any real wear and tear on the concrete since it is a kickwall, but I would like it to last and look good.

I did the exact same thing youre talking about. You can see pixs in my thread below.

I cleaned the concrete by simply using my shop vac. I went over it pretty well. Mine wasnt really all that bad though.

After it was cleaned I painted on a concrete primer. It dries really fast. I then went back and painted with a concrete paint.

I used sherwin williams products. They can set you up with the same. The primer was called Loxon primer and the paint was an enamel. Came in a green can.

After everything was painted (I painted mine black) I went along the edge where the concrete met drywall with a black silicone caulk. This really cleaned up the edge.

*oh one more thing. I painted this before I installed my Racedeck flooring. And when I painted the concrete I actually painted the floor just a touch. I did that so when the floor was put down you wouldnt see natural colored concrete between the floor and the painted concrete wall. Hope that makes sense

It really looks like it turned out great in your pics, that's how I want mine.

Did you have to do multiple coats? Roll and Brush or how did you apply?

Once you use the primer the paint cover really well. My concrete wall had little holes and pits in it.

I used a brush on the top edge and along the bottom. I then rolled in the middle.

I ended up doing two coats, but the paint I used dried so quick, it went super fast.

I used the brsh to sorta glob the paint into the holes and imperfections. Then used the roller to knock it down and clean it up.

When I painted the walls in the wifes building, I never primed. All I did was blow it off with the airhose so no dirt was around the baseboard cracks and then painted it with a good brand of latex porch paint.
