Folks, do I need any of those in order to replace my HVAC unit? I understand I may need permit/inspection, but do I need special license to install central AC? I have automotive knowledge of handling AC systems but do not know what is requirements for residential?

Thanks!

Over here, if you own the property, you can replace your own unit. Just don't work on somebody else's unit. As far as buying refrigerants, you still need the EPA license.

Looks like I need permit and EPA cert in order to do that.
Does anybody have info/advice for test preparation? I think having EPA cert and be able to buy refrigerant will pay off as soon as my air conditioner will brake :)

Go to the nearest a/c parts vendor like CC Dickson and they will set you up.
You can also take the test online.

buying the freon requires a license... but most condenser units come pre-charged whith the amount that you need. it depends on how long your line set runs as to if you need more but typically they come with enough to git-er-done... let me know if you have any other ?s... i've been doing it for about 8 years now. houses are kind of a diferent animal.
