Is there a difference? Is the frequency converter used for converting from 50 to 60 hertz or does it work the same as a phase converter?

A phase converter converts single phase power into 3 phase power, either by a rotary converter, motor generator set, or by passive components.
A frequency converter converts power at one frequency to power at a different frequency, again by either motor generator set, or electronically.
Motor generator sets are old technology, heavy, bulky and expensive. Rotary converters are more compact but still bulky.
Newer technology is the VFD - variable frequency drive. Electronic in nature, take typically 240V 60 Hz single phase in and convert to whatever desired 3 phase output voltage, and allow motor speed control by varying the output frequency.

How big is this unit? Do you have a manufacture part number? We use frequency converters on our machines to measure the output frequency of the converter and they convert the signal to an analog output that is used for process control.

The unit is pretty big, probably 4 feet tall and has a huge motor on it. Not sure of a model number. I am trying to get it from work before they throw it away even though I dont know what I would do with it. The motor alone is worth keeping.

I know we have several machines that came from our parent company in Germany, and I know Germany uses 50 hertz, I assume that is why we had it in the first place. I was hoping it could possibly be repurposed.
