Pinion gear removal

I cannot get the pinion gear to come out of a craftsman 103.23620 drill press. I cannot see anything hanging it up. The set screw was removed and the spring is inside that assembly. Any secrets out there.

Did the spindle pulley on this model 103.23620 have a bearing similar to the spindle bearing on the 103.23640 model?
