Plastic vapor barrier under carpet?

Hey fellas Let me ask you? It is dmp under my house and the damp smell sometimes comes up thru the vents. I'm going to install new carpet. Would it hurt to put down a plastic barrier down under the the carpet pad?

That may create a mold and/or rot issue. The best way to deal with a damp crawl space is to apply vapour barrier and insulation to the ground and crawl space walls, then condition the space.
