I have inherited some tools from my step father who passed away I have no use for these and also in some desperate need for cash I have had people offer me for the tools but I am not sure what they are worth or what is fair.
I have 500+ tap/die pieces and 30+ air tools
Any ideas as to what the whole lot would be worth????
Any ideas are appreciated

it all depends....

with out descriptions, it is a shot in the dark...you can spend some time on eBay and look at the "sold" prices for your items, that would put you in the ball park..

ie...used harbor freight air ratchet...$20-50
used snap-on air ratchet...........$75 and up

taps and dies are in the same boat...name brand taps and dies, less than 3/8" might go for a dollar or so...while the entire walmart set would also be a dollar or two, used.

While I'm no expert, I'd say the tap and dies could go for $100-200 as a lot. Maybe more depending how many are new. Some of those taps can go for $20 or more brand new for each one. The air tools you can piece out for around $30 each for no names and up to $50 a piece for the better stuff.

With there being over 500 pieces of the tap/die you think 100-200 for all of them?

I forgot about that tid bit of info. Honestly I can't say for sure. Some could be doubles, triples, or more. Some could be worn down or broken. Others are brand new. It's hard to say. I know I've seen boxes of 100 used taps and dies at flea markets for $50. It all depends on who's looking and what they're willing to pay.

I quickly counted 33 air tools.
If you asked $20 each, that would be $660.
You could try asking $1000 for the lot, and go from there.
If you are including the box, go $200 higher.
Start high and work your way down.
Just my .02.

All depends on where you are located. I could not sell anything at my dads farm in Kentucky population 700, closets "city" 75 miles away.

In Chicago, those would sell.

Location would be good to know as I'm sure someone on this board is nearby and would be interested in making on offer.

I had to do a search of your taps and dies and it appears they are made in the USA so that is a good first start. Like someone else said when they are all hitting each other that tends to dull them if they keep banging around so maybe you could separate them in some way that tends to help in selling them.

If and that is a big "IF" you can test each air tool and hear if they work that is a great selling point. Mind you if you have no idea if they work then buyers will low ball you to death and want to give you next to nothing for them.

Just this morning I stopped at a garage sale and darn if I had been there about a year ago ,stupid me I forgot the old geezer was asking high prices on all his junk and he would never come down one penny. Long story short version he had a table full of air tools so I picked up one and said does it work and how much? he shouted "AS IS $100.00 dollars".
so I put it down and picked up a rusty air tool bit and said How much and he yelled $6.00 dollars I countered with a lower price of $4.00 dollars and he started yelling I will use that, so I left thinking ok have fun hauling all that **** back up your driveway.

Hope that helps you out a little.

Having those tap & dies thrown together like that doesn't indicate they were well taken care of.

For me they become basically worthless. You'd be better off selling the air tools for $20-30 each. The cased taps if in good shape for a buck or two each and sell the mix by the pound. If you put it all up for a grand, I doubt you'll get any bites.

To be honest, the taps appear to have been stored as a junk collection. I question anyone knowledgeable would use good taps and store them in such a manner..
In other words; I would put little value in taps that have been mistreated..

The air tools would be questionable without trying them out. The price would depend on brand and condition.. For example: I have a SnapOn air ratchet that still looks like new; but is worthless junk because the plastic vanes for the air motor are no longer made. Off brand used air tools are $5 or $10; as new off brands are dirt cheap. Some of the IR, CP, SnapOn, and others will have better value; but they should be presented only when cleaned up, and identified by make, model, and condition..

When I see a drawer of taps like that I assume they are used up and not worth much. To have that many taps he most likely was in some sort of business that he needed to tap a lot of holes, maybe machine shop. The taps get old after a number of holes and you throw them in the drawer and get a new one. You don't take new or good taps and throw them all together like that. At least not if you value your tools. So honestly to me they wouldn't be worth much at all. The new ones in cases you can sell for more. Have to google sizes for comparable prices and then depending on things you can start at about half price usually.

Air tools look like there might be some nice ones in there. Looks like a dynabrade disc sander and some other goodies. You would have to google them also to see what they are new and also check ebay for used prices. For example those dynabrades go for just under 200 brand new. Now the real question, do you know for sure if they work? When was the last time they were ran? If you haven't personally tested them or had them tested then you have to pretty much sell them as unknown and will get far less.

I sent you a PM. I might be willing to make an offer on the rivet guns. Please read my PM and let me know what you think. Brand and model and confirmation they function would be helpful. Thanks.
