Pliers rack before and after

So for almost a year I have eying up the pliers rack after seeing it in other peoples toolboxes. I'm not sure why I keep putting off getting them. Maybe it was the shipping or maybe because I like many other thought I could make something better.

Well I finally broke down and ordered 2 pair of the 30in long last week. I am very happy I did. There is no way I could have made these cheaper or better. The only downside is my box drawers are not deep enough to get both racks in one drawer without it being cluttered.

Looks nice! Where did you get them from?

i bought them amazon, im not sure the seller. The place I started to put the order in was $16 a rack and 14ish shipping. Around $48 but there estimated arrival date was more than 2 weeks. So I canceled that order and paid 19ish a rack with 10ish for shipping.

Neverenough, if it was warmer in the garage Im sure I could dig through the boxes and fill the other rack. I did notice I cant find 2 pair of pliers now that I of course have room for them.

How deep of a drawer does it actually require? Im not sure if they would fit in my box going off the websites measurements.

Hey Tony, I was on eBay earlier.....found the plier rack & pm'd the seller for a shipping quote to Canada....$22 bucks (the rack was only $ 12 ). Perhaps he thinks we are all filthy rich up here ! :shocking::shocking::lol_hitti

I have one as well and am happy with it. I actually have mine is the same box as yours and in the same drawer....3rd down in the roller.

The only problem with them is I have an issue when I see empty spaces and then it makes me buy more tools. My 30 space pliers rack is full and I have a couple of spots doubled up....

Nice stash of pliers!

<----very jealous of your knipex!

I understand what you mean, I squished two of those racks in one drawer....wish I had more room to work with also!

They do work pretty good. I have used them for 1-2 year now. I'm sure I could have made something like other members have done out of dish racks. But for what I consider a relative low amount of $$, Im glad I just bought a pair! :)

mkdive, how deep is that drawer that you have?

I've thought about buying another plier rack and face them toward each other like you've done, but I don't know if I'll have the room without the pliers bumping heads.

Thanks

just put your pliers in the drawer standing up. prop them up with sockets.

Thats how you know if you have enough room. The pliers are bigger then the rack

I think this thread just convinced me to buy a deeper roll-cab. I was considering one of the HF units, but they aren't deep enough. Looks like you'd need a 22"-24" deep unit to have drawers deep enough for two rows without interference.

WOW thats a really nice setup, I have been wondering what to do to organize my plier drawer for awhile. Anyone have any ideas on an easy make it yourself version, or any stores that would carry a similar device you could modify for a plier rack?

I think I am going with the shorter ones oriented front to back on each side in my little 26" Sears box.

I think this is one of those if you aren't sure your that handy bending wires around, just buy the right thing, use it and forget about the cost. ***

*** Sure wish I could do that. For myself I will wait until somebody has cheap/free shipping.

IMO its not worth the hassle.. i got my from northern tools so shipping wasnt too bad considering it came with a bunch of other stuff..

the only alternative i see is maybe a DVD rack? i was previously using a cd rack but the spacing wasnt wide enough

but thats one of the biggest downfalls for tool organizers.. they are FAIRLY priced but if you are buying just one the shipping usually draws me away...

mine...

Very nice racks boost.

Those are the best home made racks I have spotted on here. Those look pretty much like the racks I bought!

But the OCD part of me wants to drive to Michigan and clip the ends off those racks! Just saying.

I also keep all the little Desiccant packs that come in boxes...and throw them in my box drawers. It really helps limit surface rust I have noticed.

Are these dish washer racks all cut up or what. Someone said on amazon, but under what search name. These look good and efficient, i think i shall barrow someone genius idea. How tall does the drawer need to be for the black ones posted earlier in the thread ?

I went the shelf rack route, 6 dollars, a few minutes of my time and it came out great. Made me realize how many more pliers I need.

Haha, I saw that plier rack thread last week and forgot to post up this picture.

I looked at the "plier rack" and northern tool and it looks very well built.

oh i plan on taking care of that. that was just scrap left over that got cut off the longer piece to make it fit in the drawer. the shelves i bought came in a two pack and i plan on bending and cutting the second one to sit like that one is but be the full width from the front of the drawer to the rear rail. its just been too cold for me to care to go out and do it :lol_hitti

After reading this thread I did an internet search and realized that Northern Tool sold them. I drove to the one that's about 10 minutes away from me and picked one up for $19.99 plus tax. Tried to use the HF 20% off coupon, but it was a no-go. I even called the manager up - who disappeared into the back for several minutes - then came back to say "No way, no how".

For those who need to trim them to fit their tool boxes - like me - note that the slots are wider on one end than they are on the other. Looks like there are about 10 wide slots total. It's wise to do some planning before you cut the rack, because if you trim the rack without knowing this you MIGHT end up cutting off whichever width you need.

DON'T ask me how I know this?! :lol_hitti

Could you take a picture of that rack without the tools, maybe put it on a table so I can get a better idea, if this is no problem. Thanks.

Here is what I just threw together last night. I looked a the pliers rack at Northern Tool but at $20 a piece I just could not pull the trigger. While at Lowes and picked up a 12" x 6' "linen" wire shelf made buy Rubbermaid. It was $7.24 pre tax. The linen rack is the plain shelf with no provisions for hanging clothes and has "slots" that measure 7/8" between wires.
Here it is as bought from Lowes
pliersrack1.jpg

I trimed to fit my Snap-On 30" drawer. Then I cut off the section of shelf that noramally is touching the wall. This cut allows the shelf to now sit at about a 25 degree angle when laying flat. For the cuts I used a cut off wheel and dressed the cuts with a Roloc disk.
pliersrack2.jpg

A little black paint
pliersrack3.jpg

And installed in the toolbox and filled up
pliersrack4.jpg

I'm super happy with the end results for the low cost and easy mods!
