OK, someone school me on the difference between an air hammer and a rivet gun. Thought I'd pick up a rivet gun to do some auto repairs and WHAM, what a price. So a hammer is $100 and a gun is $1000. How can there be that kind of difference?

X series will come in different capacities, AKA, different forces. The triggers are also far less sensitive to give easy starting and control.
They can be found for much less than $1000. Check out Aircraft Spruce or the YardStore for a good selection of guns and rivet sets.

The major differences are in the trigger control, power regulation, anti vibration / recoil
Typical Air Hammers tend to be on/off with little control of power or # of impacts
While Most Rivet guns offer a much more responsive trigger through the whole power range with control down to the individual impact.
^^^ They range from 1X-9X (having the most power) Which corresponds to capacity of rivet each gun can handle. They are made for repitious and precision work in the industrial and aircraft fields... They are produced to a much higher standard and thus cost significantly more..

Finky, I did the search and read that thread. Doesn't answer my question though, or maybe I don't understand. Can I drive al rivets with my air hammer? Seems not. I'm hearing it is too long on stroke to drive rivets. Specs don't indicate so. Just trying to learn here.

If you were a rivet expert with 1000hrs and tons of rivets under you belt you could probably make due in theory, but it would be far from productive or repeatable... As I said above the key to almost all rivet guns is in there precision of power and trigger control.
Rivet guns come in 9 basic sizes each to fit a very specific range of rivet ( steel or aluminum ) 2-3x are comon smaller guns, 4-6x are more middle range guns, 7x-9x are the large guns once you get larger than that you get into rivet busters which are similar to a jack hammer of sorts
RRH04=3x RRH08=5x RRH12=7x
