Buck 110. Not only does it work well for a knife and a screw driver, it's a pretty good improvised hammer, too. I bet y'all would never be able to unstick a carburator float with one of those fancy lightweight knives!:lol_hitti

 I have a couple of other Bucks and a Leatherman Wave as well but the 110 is the one I almost always carry.

Spyderco Endura 4 with a full serrated blade. I have carried them for about 10 years and I have found them to be an excellent knife.

I see some really sub-standard knife steel in this thread. Sorry but it needed to be said. (And some of you are carrying quality steel, so no offense intended your direction.)

About half you guys really need to pay attention to the stainless steel that's used in your knife...unless you just use it for spreading butter and actually like sharpening it on a daily basis. There have been major (I mean MAJOR) advances in stainless steel since the 1980s and 1990s, but some of you guys are carrying lard-soft stainless blades of yesteryear and have no idea, apparently, there's anything better...or don't care.

Stay away from those horrible 320, 410, 420, 420HD, 420J2, 440A, 12C27, 8cr13mov, AUS-4, AUS-6, GIN-1 stainless steels. They have two advantages: doesn't rust, making a 'pretty' knife; and it's soft enough the mfg'r can stamp it from a blank, and make it cheap. It's OK for a collector-only knife, but for real use you need to get a modern stainless steel that can't be blank stamped. If it's stainless and the mfgr doesn't say what kind of steel it is, YOU probably have a knife with cheap, bendy steel that won't stay sharp through even a modest task.

Yeah, I know, you're happy with it and you love it...that's what they always say. But sometime, try a good steel knife, and you'll be blown away at the difference in edge retention and ability to hold a more acute edge without degradation.

Old school Microtechs for me, but they are quite pricey/valuable, especially the old ones. I also use an old Beretta knife for box cutting.

Any of the spyderco knives are great. I have three that i carry depending on what i think I will be doing. I prefer the all stainless instead of the plastic handle. They look timeless and wipe clean no matter what i cut with it. I have a fully serrated, half and half, and a regular blade.

Some of the best stainless steel knives come from Seki-City Japan. I think all of spyderco knives are made from that steel.

I carry this SOG Aegis, and I really, really like this knife. I have had a few Kershaws but this one is my all time favorite. Check out the full review this guy did, here:

My multi-tool EDC is a Leatherman Wave.

I had a Ken Onion knife and the spring mechanism on it failed. Sent it in, and they sent back a totally different knife, that I really didn't like. Kinda soured me on them.

I also had a benchmade at one point in time that I really liked, but I misplaced it and haven't yet been able to find it.

Now, my EDC knife is a SOG Flash II, with the FAST opening. I like it a lot. Nicely balanced, with a straight edge so I can sharpen it easily, and a nice handle (albeit plastic). Also, the handle on it has a nice shape, so it is easy to use as an...uh...multipurpose tool without worrying about your hand slipping onto the blade.

My favorite knife is my Benchmade auto-opener I was issued. It's a DAMN good knife.

I've also got an auto opener that was issued to me. Best pocket knife I have ever owned and I've got about 15-20 different knives of varying brands.

Some of the best stainless steel knives come from Seki-City Japan. I think all of spyderco knives are made from that steel.

It appears that most people don't give a hoot about the steel in their knife. In fact, even in this thread, you find almost zero curiosity about steel grades. :headscrat

The Seki steel you're referring to is likely VG-10. However Spyderco uses a whole range of excellent steels. Spyderco and Benchmade are often cited as the leaders in the "mass market but excellent steel" knife arena. There are many producers with smaller markets that exclusively use exotic and botique steels. And there are some mass market mfgrs that put upgrade steel into a couple of models, such as Kershaw & Boker. However it is difficult to find a Benchmade or a Spyderco with poor steel.

Since there's little curiosity or interest in superior steels in this thread, let me just make this one recommendation:

If the manufacturer is bragging about the type of steel they use, and putting that steel at the top of the list of attributes, and if the knife is pricey and from a known respected brand, chances are you're getting good steel. It's not foolproof (eg, Cold Steel brags about their steel, which is widely acknowledged to be of low quality), but generally knives of crappy steel aren't advertised regarding the steel being used. Crappy knives will generally be advertised based on their design or handle materials.

Top grade steels are very expensive. I recollect that ZDP-189, for instance, is about 20x as expensive as the excellent super steel, VG-10. That's from memory, so don't quote me on it. But the point is, you really *can* expect a better knife to cost more, due to quality of steel alone.

Awfully nice knife to be used as a hammer. Trouble is, up here at least, a Buck 110, Gerber Combat Folder, Spyderco Police model, SOG Tomcat or anything else with a blade length over 3 1/2" will get the attention of the local LEOs, and anything full auto is guaranteed jail time.

There are special knives being mfgd for people who live in Chicago...very restrictive knife rules in some of the big urban leftist strongholds...

More often than not, I carry my Cold Steel Recon 1 folder with the spear point 1/2 serrated. I wish it was only serrated for 1" of the blade instead of 2". It's pretty much what mood I'm in or where I'm going. I love fixed blades to a fault - I just don't go anywhere where I can carry them, or have much of a need for them.

Other common choices:
CRKT M21-14
CRKT M16-14FDZ
CRKT M16-13FDZ
Kershaw Leek stainless
Beretta Airlight
CRKT M16-13Z

Slightly off topic but may be a good idea for you guys getting married. I bought a nice lot of Kershaws for all the men in my wedding party and had their names engraved on them.
I wanted something that was different, manly and useful. I got one for myself too. wish I had a picture of in handy.
Feel free to steal the idea if you like it. The boys all loved them.
Got two more for my dad and hers as well (hers happens to collect knives and ALWAYS has one on hand, I think this one became his "dress" knife.

I would love to see a photo of the engraving when you get a chance. I will be jumping off that cliff in the near future, and that seems like a good idea.

Did you follow the knife tradition, and have them offer you back a coin, or silver dollar etc? :headscrat

Just curious for all you Knife/Law guys. How serious is it to be caught with a switch blade? I was thinking about carrying one strictly for protection when we go downtown, etc. I want something that if I need it quick it's there. But if I were pulled over and happened to be search, I don't want to go to jail either.

If its not a EDC, and doesn't conform to the local laws of the land where you live that is a risk you have to decide upon.

I don't take a chance, just carry one of the EDC's which I consider throw away if it got lost, no big loss in terms of cash, or personal.

Auto's are pretty much banned in any local town, only person's allowed to carry fully automatic knives are those in uniform, or military.

I had a little bit of a problem buying one, because the vendor stated only for leo's and those in the armed forces.

But, he sold me one knowing my back ground, and intent . . . Also military support doesn't hurt either . . .

No need for an auto, you can open many of today's knives with a hole/lug on the blade almost as fast, and some people argue "as fast."

Also there are now "Emerson Wave" knives that have a finger machined on the top of the blade; it catches the corner of your pants pocket and deploys on draw. That would be faster than an auto, and 100% legal.

Even if I'm 1/10 second slower with a manual open, I don't see the need to risk jail time for it.

Here is a old picture I posted up awhile ago when I almost threw out all of these knives when I moved, thank God I checked first! Almost as bad I almost dumped out the box that had the Spyderco, Benchmade, SOG, knives in another random box . . .

Here is one of the box's that almost got thrown out . . .
