Good morning, I found your forum while researching polyaspartic coatings gone wrong! I apologize for the long post but I desperately need professional advice as on whether, I am just crazy or this job is bad because the owner has stated; the job is perfect…which is laughable since he has not seen it as of yet.
I had my front 6’ x 9’ cement porch covered by a reputable local company here in Ontario Canada.
Unfortunately, I did not do much research on the product only the contractor, who on the day the application was completed, left his one employee to do it with a new helper. The contractor has not seen the job completed on August 1st and maintains it was done right.
Starting the first evening of the application (never happened before that), we were finding dead wasps, anywhere from 3-13, this morning there are 8. I also find the carcasses of cicada & potato bugs…always dead or in the process of dying on the porch. Shockingly we have ants all over the sidewalk & driveway attached to the porch but the ants will not go on the porch at all, almost like they know; they will die from the toxins. Are these deaths co-incidences?
I have been in contact with the product manufacturer. The product he states is a;
Our Polyaspartics do contain a small trace of solvents. The formulation ratio is approx. 80% Solid : 20% Solvents. We expect complete dissipation of solvents within the first 48 hours to 72 hours as the coating cures. In an exterior setting, solvents will dissipate much more rapidly as the material is not confined. Once the coating has cured and hardened (tac free) the material shall be considered a solid compound.’
So right out the gate, based on his information, we have a major problem because it stunk well beyond that time parameter. PS; love he refers to 20% solvents as a trace amount!
The smell was overwhelming, same as the day it went on for at least; a week and a half.
The contractor denies adamantly that; they cut the product further. The manufacturer states; we have not had any recalls nor product in quarantine.
The day of the application our humidity here was off the charts and storms were being called for; to the point we had a tarp ready and waiting to hang to protect the porch.

Two days ago, I had several people independently smell the porch; they actually put their nose to the preverbal grindstone LOL. All of them smelled something except for one, who admittedly has no sense of smell. After sniffing this is what they smelled in their words; the 11 year granddaughter smelled nail polish, the SIL smelled chemicals and the daughter smelled paint. Now, this is not all over the porch just at certain spots of the porch. I smell a chemical odor, heavier in the early morning before everyone wakes. When I open my front door for the first time I get a; overwhelming smell welcoming me…as they covered the front stoop with it as well.
The issues I see with the application are;
- The topcoat is inconsistent, areas that are dull due to the lack of topcoat
- Inconsistent chip distribution, so there is some mounding
- clouding in areas within a day of application.
- the bow front steps crevices have little to zero top coat
-heavy clear glaze at the junction; where one step meets the other
-appears there are 2 blisters that have ruptured (not that that is a big deal unless there are VOC’s)
-all edges are left raw and exposed along the house and steps with lots of gaps for emissions
My research especially on this board has me very concerned that this porch is emitting VOC’s. Since the application, because I am a delicate butterfly LOL no but seriously I do have allergies…my eyes water, my throat closed and I am using my puffer for asthma. Maybe I am just bat **** crazy but if you could help me and tell me your thoughts on this completed job, it would be greatly appreciated and I can guide my next steps accordingly. It will also help when and if this contractor ever makes an appearance he was supposed to be here yesterday did not show or call, just messaged me he’ll be here at 10…so you know already this guy does not care! I plan to hire an air quality tester and I have already arranged to get a core sample tested for VOC’s.
I really need professional opinions on the quality of this job and if these ‘flaws’ would impact the toxicity as my research says it does…but I am not an expert!
Thank you so much!

every thing is toxic to some one or something. Did you mention your allergies to the contractor or ask for something more bug friendly?

Air quality tester and core sample? Were I the contractor, I would be scarce.

Without pictures, it is difficult to assess.

I am trying to find a photo site that will be accepted here. The contractor was great prior to leaving on vacation, friendly easy to work with, I was actually impressed until he disappeared. No I did not mention my allergies because I did not expect it to be an issue, a/c still on, doors & windows closed & as I said, not just me smelling an odor being emitted and the dead bugs are very worrisome. We expected when he got back, 3 days after the job; he would call to see how it went. We waited about 3 weeks and the husband called him to inform him of our concerns and asked him to come by, he did not. Waited another week and I got involved sending him an email informing him I was taking my concerns further as I truly believe the porch is emitting toxins. I forgot to mention that the coating stains very easy for leaves and maple keys...takes some elbow grease to remove. This was not a cheap job...$2,300 without taxes. We have had this home completely renovated within the last 1.5 years, spent close to 140,000 so far and this has been our only issue to date. I guess I am saying that we are not complainers and have dealt with an onslaught of contractors and no problems. We love the look of the porch but have our concerns. thank you back to trying to load photos!

Okay contractor came...he is now concerned once he saw all the dead insects. He offered to simply scuff it and apply another top coat...Can I ask, would that suffice to seal the toxins in, so they do not emit? Or does it all have to come off and be reapplied? thank you again for help

toxin has been identified??? IF not, it needs to be. What did the contractor say about the toxins?

If it is causing what you describe, I would grind it back to bare concrete and use/find/buy a product that is more friendly to your health.

Something does not add up as regards dead bugs...

The contractor has no idea of the toxicity of the product only how to put it on...he also knows little about how humidity or wetness affects it. He really doesn't know much about the product itself. His employees did not wear protective gear at all. Mind you it was outside but the air was thick with heat and humidity as storms were being called for, no gloves, wearing shorts and tshirts. We have not determined the toxin, have to wait for Tuesday to order the tests. Correct something does not add up. I agree with you, if it is toxic needs to be ground right down. The contractor requested I send him all the information I have researched about the product. His plan is to go after the manufacturer for not training them properly...IDK

Wow and you hired him:shocking:
I’m thinking on doing Polyaspartic but they have done 1600 applications. I have seen 3 of his jobs and another one is a 10 year old floor my buddy has installed. Probably have walked in a few more and didn’t realize it. Take a look at the Polyaspartic thread started a day before yours.

I checked all of his positive reviews, so yes I hired him. I do believe he is very concerned now, as he did not know the product could emit toxic fumes...but again I am just guessing what is going on based on the odor and dead bugs just on the porch...checked your post and must say love those vintage lamps; very cool! Your garage looks like it will be amazing; every mans dream garage.

Without being there to personally inspect the coating and smell it, it sounds like a possibility of under mixture, and possibly misapplication. You'd be wise to inspect the areas are admitting odor and press on them with your fingernail to see if they are soft and indent.

The solvents you smell cannot be "sealed up" they must cure and outgass, until there are none left. If the floor cures, they can scuff it and apply a 100% solids polyurea. That still emits a smell, almost like sour apple, but has no harsh chemical fumes.

Any application, if done exterior, must be done in the shade. It is absolutely necessary sunlight not directly shine on wet product

I’m sure your contractor can deal with the supplier and can remediate your current issues. Probably a good time to see if there are some extras he can share with you for your grief and sorrow.

Why out of the sun...curious because the porch steps and front were definitely in the sun when they were done, full sun with temps of 81-82. I did a finger nail tap and there are areas that do sound a tad bit hollow in some spots.

Did you follow benwahs advice to press on them with your fingernail to see if they are soft and indent.? I suggest you call Poison Control Center

This is an absolute nightmare. Yes there were hollow spots...lots of them!
We performed several experiments to prove the toxicity, very scary **** what happened to the poor mice I put on there! New top count on dead wasps is 23 in 1.5 hours!
Conclusive; porch is toxic
The chemical engineer came today. He really couldn’t smell it but in one spot minimally because in his job he has burnt out all of his smell fibers.
He cut a 1” by 1” piece and the toxins were so strong just about knocked him over. I could smell them and I was standing 4” away. He had immediate burning watering eyes & dizzy, this after being on the porch for about 10 minutes. He stated it smelled of strong chlorine and another gas started with a ‘lac’ and he said symptoms apply for both chemicals he smelled. Are these chemicals usually found in polyaspartic?
He said rotten job, coating missing, uneven and way to thin. He said it was a very deep saturation into cement when he did sampling.
He concurred best thing given this toxicity was to; remove the whole damn porch because as of yesterday it began to wick through my door stoop and vent into my home. Yes windows all open, fans everywhere.
Law suit time 
My biggest fear is that he has put this product in people’s finished basements, garages, businesses etc. The only thing that clued us into the toxicity was the dead bees; people won't have those bees in their homes to warn them. I smelt it from day one my husband did not. We had to dispose of all the concrete by the pound at landfill rather than recycle as recommended by another environmental company. Still waiting on the Ministry of Environment, guess we had a huge toxic spill locally and they are hopping taking care of that. I have kept sealed specimens for them as well. Thank you for all of your guidance, help.

should these coating have a lacrimatory or is it an strong indication, as the Prof suggested that the product was cut....same with the overwhelming chlorine odor. He asked what the mixure was; 80% solid - 20% solvent, which he said judging by how strong the odor was when he did the scraping that it should not be that strong on an 80-20...either that or this guy really messed up the application and created a toxic element by whatever they did wrong, I know they applied i
t in full sun, which from what I read is a no no
