Powdercoating question?

I'm planning on painting the centers of my 3-piece wheels. The paint is an odd color (BBS/Wurth Gold), only available via one source. Unfortunately, I don't think the paint will hold up under regular use, so I was thinking about having a "clear" powdercoating applied on top of it.

So...question is...can you apply a clear/gloss powdercoating over a painted surface? Are there any other suitable clear coatings?

I'm not a body man but I think a clear urethane would work good.

I don't know how the paint would hold up to the heat if you were to powdercoat them..

Yeah, I would, but it's difficult to source this color in anything but rattle cans. There's one company that sells it, and that's all I have to work with.

I had my brake calipers powdercoated a couple years ago, and they did a color base powder and applied a clear powder over the top of that, so it can definitely be done. I had some decals I wanted on them, so they applied the decals over the color coat, and cleared over that to seal them in place. I was very happy with the end result, and they've held up great to this day (no chipping at all).

Did they use a clear powdercoat (heat process)? My local shop has a source for decals that won't melt in the oven, but not sure you can use any 'ol decal.

I guess I'll take the wheels over to them for an answer, but they're such a pain to deal with on custom type stuff. They just want to do "routine" work and they jack you up with a higher price if there's anything involved about your order.

Yes...it was a clear powdercoat, and the decals were high temp. resistant (specifically for brake calipers, so they have to be able to handle at least some heat). If they were just regular ol' decals, they would probably have just peeled up in the oven before the powder could flow out.

any good body shop can color match that color and make you just enough to finish your job, start there.

I already own the paint. And around here, "friendly" body shops are far and few between. No-one is going to do me a favor and custom-mix a color without me handing over large amounts of $$$. I am certain the charge for custom-mixing paint and spraying the four wheel centers would be around $250+. Then, if the color is off, too bad. Hand over another $250, please...not to mention, the wheels will sit in the body shop for 4 ~ 6 weeks until they have time to get to the "small" job.

powders have to be compatible, you can't coat over something else. get a can of clear and shoot it over the spraypaint, best I can suggest.

I stock this, BBS and Subaru guy's pants get tight when they see it. I do tons of stuff in the color, I have cleared over it, but it takes away the semi-matte look of it, and gives it too much depth the guys say. are the centers loose, and bare? What model wheels are they?

Looks a little too "gold", but it's hard to tell by looking at it via computer screen. I do want a gloss finish as they barrels will be highly polished. A matte center wouldn't look right.

Wheels are OZ Racing, (TechArts) from the early 90's.

Yes, centers are separated from the barrels. They need to be stripped/blasted.

Where are you located and what would be the approximate cost to blast/coat?

You cant powder coat over paint it will just peel the paint you have to clear over powder I own a small beadblast and powdercoat shop its just me and my son we have powder coated everything you can imagine we have customers bring us all kinds of things and we are about the cheapest around from what i have been told.

The media guy I use for stripping wheels would probably charge me ~$75-100 depending how much work it was to get off, he's expensive, and worth every last penny. He uses crushed glass or soda depending on what's on them, and he's OCD. I'd ask for around $30-40 ea to coat with a clear.

OK, thanks. I think I'll stick with my original plan and DIY. I do have some motorcycle wheels that would look good in that color your referenced. Perhaps I'll send you those in the future.
