Power supply for unit heater

Maybe a dumb question but I am curious as to wether most unit heaters have the capability to be plugged into an outlet in the garage or if they need to be wired directly to the electrical panel.

AFAIK, they can be plugged in but should/must be on their own circuit.

I was told they need a dedicated circuit. I was also told that you cannot "plug" them in, they must be permenantly wired (I wanted to do the same as you). Also, there must be a service switch nearby with a fancy red cover plate with the off position clearly indicated.

This is Canada code, but 99% of Canada and US codes are the same so I suspect it's the same for you.

Does this mean you are out of luck if the electrical panel is in a place where it would be hard to wire to unlless you took down some of your ceiling?

If you want it to code, then yes you are pretty much out of luck. You could do surface mount conduit or run through the attic if that's an option.
