Any idea what the power consumption for the transformer would be?

Transformers transform, so what goes in generally then goes out. There is a very (very) small loss in terms of local heating- is this what you are wondering? How much will be consumed by the transformer itself?

Im going spitball at about 100 watts for a 10kva transformer, maybe more under full load(?)

Are used to have one of these at the place I used to work. It was a single phase transformer, probably 25 kVA. I remember that it was always warm, even in the middle of winter. If 100 w is accurate and I put one on each end, that’s a total of 200W. That’s not insignificant either, probably $15 a month to run.

yeah, prolly not worth it.

Do keep in mind that in the winter they save you heat. That is if they are inside your insulation envelope. 100W is that much less heat you need out of the heater itself. Will you need to keep either end above freezing to prevent pipe freezing? Might not be as extravagant a waste as you think...

transformers only generate waste heat proportional to their loading. you can expect 98-99%. lets go with 98%.

at 500w load you're looking at 10w wasted.
1000w is 20w.

etc etc.

again its only when actual transformation is occurring.

I would try without transformer first and see how it performs. You can always step up and back down at a later time

If you are only keeping power on now to keep it from freezing up can you winterize it and have the power shut off again. I would consider leaving the power off but add a generator interlock so I could power it up to work on it if desired. When it's ready to rent I'd have the power restored.

So what is your 'plan'?

What size wire should he first install and what breaker should he use on the circuit? In other words, what is your 'phase 1' installation?

Personally I would use #2 copper on a 60 amp breaker

gotta balance cost on over sizing the 1100' of wire compared to running transformers on both ends. the right ebay deal could easily swing this into transformer and smaller wire. if he's in no hurry then just watch ebay for transformer deals. after 750' it should be considered IMO.

Your right I hadn’t considered that cost of transformers versus smaller wire. I take for granted we have spools and spools of #2 and #6 laying around where I work

well if they're just laying around by all means send a pallet load my way. I'll find a use for them.
