I have been meaning to pick up one of the plastic trim tools sets for a while. when I was at SEMA recently I was given a couple of them for free as samples from a company called BOJO.
I had also seen that HF had a set of these on sale for $5.99 (reg $6.99). when I went to HF to see them I saw they also had a set on sale for $3.99 (reg $5.99)
the set in the clear cello pack was the set on sale for $5.99 (reg $6.99) and are made in china.
the set in the box was the set on sale for $3.99 (reg $5.99). it has 7 pieces and was made in ARMENIA.
the 2 loose pieces were the ones given to me at SEMA and are made in the USA
the ones I will be reviewing will be the 2 samples from the SEMA show and the most similar ones from each of the sets from HF.
starting with the left 3.
the bojo (grey) and the HF armenian (black) pieces are nearly identical in shape but the bojo version is much stiffer will work much better on something that you need to pry on to get apart. the (blue) HF part is fairly stiff and should get the job done
now the 3 on the right.
the bojo piece is really a scraper for easy maring surfaces. the hardness of the piece and the shape of the edge makes me belive that it would do well with getting gasket material off a surface espically of you used some of the gasket remover stuff on it first. the head would be too thick to be effective getting behind an emblem.
The (black) HF piece does not seem like it would last very long working on a gasket. the shape of the tip would be more suited for prying off a thin piece or getting behind an emblem to remove it.
the larger (blue) HF piece is not a close match to either set but was the closest one in that set. this part is made from a fairly stiff reinforced plastic. this one could be used for gasket scraping but I think it would have a shorter life at that than the bojo piece due to the shape and thickness of the head. this part seems like it would do a good job on emblems and prying trim where you need a wider surface to pry with.
final review
the USA made bojo pieces seem to be of a good quality and should perform well. the basic set of 4 of these are $20 from summitt (the bojo website says its a $16 set). the delux set of 7 pieces is $24 in the summitt catalog and includes all the same pieces shown with the blach HF set pictured above. the $24 price for the 7 pieces seems more in line than the 4 piece set.
the blue HF set seems like a decent purchase for the $6 price and has a couple of pieces in it that are different than the standard set that I think could be very helpfull.
the black set from HF (made in armenia) seem ok for occasional use. no where as good as the bojo sample but for the price could be worth it as a backup (spare) set or helper set to your primary.
the old addage you get what you pay for is true in this case, while the HF pieces seem like they are good for the money you will need to adjust your expectations with the price.
