Posted this in the plomb thread a while back, but i have managed to acquire it now, and just finished gettign it back in working order, a Manufactured in Los Angeles inch drive Proto pebble ratchet, circa 1950s i think?

Had been seriously abused at some point and was locked solid,
the screws holding the backplate on were bent to the point they wouldn't turn, so drilled them out and found that two teeth had been sheared off of the gear.. guess someone had a scaffold tube on it at some point,

I'm on the lookout for a kit for it so if anyone knows where i can find one at a reasonable price (seems proto still sell a kit for it, or at least did until recently as the more modern 5849 still uses same mechanism)

For now I managed to build up new teeth by welding it up and filing to shape, its not perfect but it works for now, just need to work out the size of screws and get replacements (UNC i think) so zipties holding it together for now so i don't lose parts

Interestingly the male drive in this ratchet is removable, and the drive plug is also marked Proto Los Angeles

Really is a monster of a ratchet, for one that's not got a removable handle, modern 1/2 drive proto one next to it for scale (apologies for the out of focus pic)

would love to find a Plomb version of this, but guess they make the proto one seem common...

I recently bought one just like yours, only it works perfectly. I have a 3/4" drive Plomb pebble, which is pretty much identical, only smaller. Hope someone has a repair kit for you.

Nice, i love plomb and Proto tools, slowly building a collection as and when i find them or have money to buy and ship from the US,

I would guess the inch and 3/4 versions are rather rare here, I certainly have never seen another, the smaller ones are rare enough, (the older plomb ratchets curiously are more common)

Was surprised when i found it at work (was buried under junk in the tool room at my work, clearly had been discarded there after someone broke it) possibly arrived here with the US airforce on one of the bases like a lot of early USA made tools

Thanks :), will need to see if they will ship out of the US

Ratchet: nice find and i'd post a picture of my 1 inch Plvmb pebble, but sorry i don't have the pictures on this laptop. it's on the Show your Plvmb thread where you can definitely post yours. also i think there is at least a couple other 1 inch ratchets there. i've yet to find a use for mine, but someday i might own a bulldozer or something big to use it on.
