Send an email to Stanley Proto customer service if you want to have fun.

Tell them you have a J5447.

Never heard from them after I send them a picture of my adapter taken apart.

Did any get any kits or get there adapter fixed? Can you use the parts off the newer version and put on the older one? I have seen pictures of the newer version and don't remember when I took mine apart.

The J5447 with the knurled selector ring is the current version. I do not remember seeing a rebuild kit for it on the Stanley Proto site. If there was I doubt if you could use the pawl for older Proto and Plomb versions.

With the older versions there is a notch cut in the pawl for the wing selector. The newer version looks like my Williams, which has a pin that rotates a shaft to change direction. The end of that pin fits into a notch on the on the selector ring.

I have a couple and just use a fine pick in both holes and turn the ratchet part while pushing one end in and then when you get one, then try to push the other, they are spring loaded and a pointed to make it easier to push in when you put back together. I was able to do it on a plomb that I had. If you need some pictures, let me know, but it does take a little poking around, that is why I used 2 fine picks, also the tabs, that are spring loaded can fall out, so be careful or you could lose them when you take it apart.
Yes this thread is quite old, but I wanted to thank you for these instructions. Very easy to disassemble.
