I haven’t asked nor found the answer for a couple years, so I hope it’s ok to ask again. Does anyone know when they added the makers mark “s” to combo wrenches like the one above?

Thanks, 3bay - a friend of mine thought the same thing.I’ve seen a couple of those but not sure exactly what it is. Maybe a brake adjuster.
What size is the 8-point opening? Measured for a square nut. Here's an interesting Proto wrench - it just came from a flea market. I can find no info at all on it.
It looks like the fairly common pebble flare wrenches, but the head is very beefy, and it's 8-point.
Internet Archive doesn't seem to have a catalog old enough for this to make an appearance.
Anyone?
It's 1/2".What size is the 8-point opening? Measured for a square nut.
The part number follows early Caterpillar, but nothing shows up in a search. (number-letter-number-number-number) later on they added another number just after the letter, so 4Y187 became 4Y0187.
1/2" square is the size of Ford truck mechanical brake adjusters from 1928-1938 model years. I see Ebay listings that claim these wrenches are for "Tool Post" screws, but don't believe that. It's 1/2".
Nice work - sounds like a match!1/2" square is the size of Ford truck mechanical brake adjusters from 1928-1938 model years. I see Ebay listings that claim these wrenches are for "Tool Post" screws, but don't believe that.
You make a great point Frank. However, even Craftsman has the 8 pt double end 1/2 x 7/16 brake wrench in V series which was what, 50’s-60’s.The Plumb/Plomb lawsuit was in 1946. It doesn't seem like Proto after 1946 would make a wrench for 10+ year old vehicles. But then I dunno.
A man's gotta have a dream....(but not at the e-bay prices: somebody is hoping to get $1900 for 2 NOS pairs).
What is that wavy matte finish ratchet?
Yeah that guy is on crack. That’s been listed for a year and is absolutely insaneThis looks fantastic, Don

That is a ratchet that I purchased from a website that basically deals exclusively with bike tools and parts, etc.....they are called Birzman. What is that wavy matte finish ratchet?

Nice ones!! Congrats Don!When I saw these I wanted some. I‘ve been known to do some fishing. I finally found some listed at a fairly reasonable price. They arrived yesterday.
Thanks ! It was leaning up against a wall buried in filth. The guy had four vintage Sioux valve grinding machines set up along one wall - also covered in decades of dust - a scrap metal guy tossed those into his dump trailer.Great save, ArmyVW_GuyInTX!

Nice find! The dark handles are not common!I found a PROTO 9686 #3 Phillips to go with this PLVMB example. They don't quite match though.
This is only the second black handled driver I've seen; the other being the #4759 1/4" socket spinner Catfishdan shared in post #467.
Proto Tools Picture Thread - Post Yours!
I fell cheesy for even commenting on that stuff, but that picture of those 18 tool boards in an actual business is way too cool.www.garagejournal.com
