Pulling wires in conduit or sleeving 200'?

Next month, I will do a 200' run of 3- #3 THHN plus ground to my pole barn. I am using 2 1/2" conduit to run wires in. Question is, should I attempt to pull wires through or sleeve the conduit over the wires, and gluing up each section as I go. There is a slight curve in the run going to the house. Which method would you guys recommend?

you should be able to pull that pretty easy with 2 people, one pulling and one feeding the wire in, would still recommend using pulling lube though. you can either use a fish tape or blow in a string and then pull in a larger rope (1/4 0r 3/8) to pull the wire in with, or you could feed the rope as you put the pipe together. before you feed in the wire dump a few handfulls of lube in the pipe before the wire goes in then feed the wire and lube it while feeding

#4 AWG is only good for 85 amperes per 75 degree column of table 310.16 of the NEC.....

should be an easy pull after you lay the conduit. keep it as straight as possible. I really like using a shop vac to pull a string through (mason's twine is light and strong) - using a scrap piece of expando foam is the secret tip for that. Tie a real pulling string to the twine, pull it back, attach the cable (and another piece of real pulling cable) and pull that back through.

and as cat06 says, get a bottle of pulling lube - it's maybe $6 at the big box stores. really, really helps.

Here's a synopsis of what I did:

I had some nagging questions and wanted to be safe and within code, I bought the 2008 version of the Ugly's Electrical Reference from HD (very informative), used the tables and formulas to find that 1/0 would give me a voltage drop of 3% or less (barely), and ended up doing the following:

For the two Hots and the Neutral I bought 870 feet of "2/0 Southwire SimPul" with THHN/THWN-2/MTW rating and had them cut it and roll it on three seperate reels (290 feet each @ $1.31 a foot - great price, most places wanted $1.70 a foot or more!).

For the Ground I bought another 290 feet of "#4 Southwire SimPul" with the same rating @ $0.61 cents a foot and put it on its own reel.

The following information is for those that have never pulled longs runs of wire:

I used a shop vac to **** light-weight string attached to a wadded up Walmart bag through the 2" conduit (took about 5 seconds - cool!). I then tied a rope to the string and pulled it through.

I stripped back the insulation on the wires about 6 or 8 inches, cut all but about 7 or 8 strands and weaved a loop at the end and then wrapped electrical tape over the weave so that it wouldn't cause any damage to other wires or conduit when pulled.

The rope was small in diameter so I pulled each wire through the conduit seperately; all four at once would have put an enormous strain on it. The pulling was actually easy because the wire was "SimPul" (very slick), the run was straight with only two 36" sweeps, and most importantly, because I used a Polaris Razor S to do the pulling while my brother inlaw fed the wire into the conduit on the opposite end.

The pipe needs to be installed completely before pulling wire, oversizing it helps in pulling & avoiding unnecessary bends is helpful, it is only allowed 360 degrees in bends (= 4 90'S) in a run also.

Easy pull. As other have said use a shop vac and a plastic bag to either pull or push a small string through. Then pull back a piece of fist tape or a good strong rope.

Here at work we pull 1/0 cable with a 260MIL jacket with a concentric neutral and 1000MCM with the same jacket these cables are big and heavy. The 1000MCM is about as big around as your forearm. We have a program that calculates pulling tensions to make sure do not damage them.

The formula for pulling force is pretty simple really. The key is that every bend in the pipe multiplies the force needed to pull the cable before the bend. So it is key to limit friction with pulling lube and the back tension from the reel of wire. 10 lbs of back tension on the feed side can easily equal 100 lbs of tension on the pulling side. make sure you have someone feeding the wire in, and plenty of lube and you will have no problems.
