pvc conduit indoors

i will add a subpanel and outlets in the garage - the conduit will be on the walls, not in them

the person at the home center said that metal conduit and pvc conduit can be used interchangeably

but the wiring for dummies book i have says pvc can be "used in a building only behind a fire resistant dry wall" - if i am reading this like a dummy, that means the home center guy is wrong and if i want to run the conduit on the walls and not behind them, it has to be metal - is that correct? - thx

Check your local city/building codes as to what they want. Where I live, Romex behind the walls. Commercial jobs EMT or MC Cable (metallic cable). Leave the underground for PVC. I recommend never comming out of the slab with PVC either as to its so easy to snap that shiat, so use rigid coming/penetrating slabs and then transition to EMT. I do not recommend PVC for surface inside raceways, unless your working with 400HZ and I highly doubt that.
